It sounds like you have a hole somewhere in your exhaust pipe. It could be anywhere from right where it comes out of the manifold all the way back to the muffler, but since you say that it sounds like it is coming from the front of the car I would think that it is somewhere in between the manifold and your cat converter. They do sell epoxy that is supposed to work on exhaust systems. I've never tried it but you could check at your auto parts store and see what they think. The only other option would be to replace or have replaced for you the section with the hole. Let me know if you have any other questions. It isn't dangerous not to fix it but if you live in a state where they do emission tests you will have some trouble when you try to pass that. As far as expensive, it can get kinda pricey. You can always take it to a place that doesn mufflers and have them look at it to give you a quote and if it's more than you want to spend tell them you will think about it. They should do the quote for free, just make sure you clear that up with them up front. fan clutches ( viscous fan hubs ) lock up on starting and produce the wind noise
on a cold engine it will last about 1 minute while the silicon fluid is being pumped to a small reservoir in the hub where it remains until heat from the radiator moves a bimetalic spring that allows the valve to open and pump fluid into the drive section where it increases the drag on the fan drive and so spins the fan
If it continues to be noisy then check that the valve control at the centre on the front of the hub is intact and not damaged
as a consolation if you can hear the fan it is working and pulling air through the radiator
it is when you don't hear it that there could be a problem especially when at lights as there is not air flow so the engine can over heat
That is not to say that the hub is not faulty from new
if you find a service centre that is an accredited shop , the mechanic has equipment that can check the hub operation
Run vehicle while on hoist/Listen w/Stethoscope.....Sometimes the 'sound' travels throughout the drive train components & can be tough to pinpoint...Time for a pro !!
Hello, it's probably not safe to drive, noises are never good news, I would suggest that you check the engine oil and if it's low add oil to it and hope it's not too late to prevent engine damage.
At that mileage your wheel bearings probably need changing, especially if you haven't been lubricating them whenever you did a brake job! Usually the front wheel bearings, the ones taking the weight from the engine and turning weight transfer to the outside wheels on curves burn out first...do it!!!
could be the power steering pump itself. If it has a bad bearing it will do that. Especially when you turn it makes the steering pump work a lot harder.
the best way to determine the cause of the noise is to remove the drive belt and start the engine for a few minutes. if it is in the drive belt components then the noise will cease. if not then the noise will remain.
not completely sure it has something to do with the auto trans, but more likely the hydraulic lifters. the older cars used to have a fixed valve clearance with tappets, but now they use hydraulic lifters. the problem with these is if you don't change the oil at a regular interval or do alot of stop-start driving, the oil becomes sludgy and does not flow into the small tolerance holes in the lifters. the beautiful thing about oil is that it thins out as it gets hotter to a point, so as the engine warms up, the oil thins out and flows into the lifter hydraulically pumping them up and closing the gap, i would suggest to change the engine oil to manufacturer's specs and add a "lifter free" product, after a few weeks it will reduce dramatically
Take all of the belts off for a short run at idle. If the sound goes away it is pulley related, spin each pulley and listen for bearing noise, also check for play at this time.
If the noise does not go away when the motor is driving no accessories you have a more serious problem.
Amelia, we just bought one off a lease 5 weeks ago (purchased from a dealer). We are having the same symptoms, suddenly, as you describe.
Took it back to the dealership. After a bit of drama, they agreed to foot the repair bill ($1000). It was a broken distributer cap and wiring which should have been replaced before it was resold to us. What a pain.

just checked, yes reving the engine in park makes the noise much louder. By the way it is a manual shift.
is it dangerous to not fix this problem. Is it expensive to fix?
