Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

Bought slightly used 2000 s-type 4.0. when i park on even a slight incline (car wash ramp) (driveway parking), I have to push gear really hard or i cannot change gear from park to drive/reverse. i've been told 2 different stories: this is an issue w/my model/year car, so i have to use parking brake then put car in park...(do the reverse when ready to leave). i have been told that newer models have an electronic sensor that compensates for this problem. The second story i've been told is that there may be a problem with the gear box or the car's cable. Not sure what to believe, because my friend has a 2000 jaguar 2.0 and has never had this problem. ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!

You need to make sure linkage is not loose or in incorrect position and have the gear selector moved from underneath car while someone checks that the shifter and indicator is following suite.

What caused my 2000 Nissan Quest engine problem?

This engine is definitely beyond repair and needs replacement. I would first shop auto recyclers in your area to find an engine/transaxle with less miles than what your mechanic is offering (100,000 miles is a lot). Hope this helps.

Rolls in park

The parking brake can be bad or stuck. There is not much to them to begin with. For the transmission, there are several potential problems.

You may just need an adjustment, as the Park is on one extreme end of the shift from the rest. It may not quite be locking.

Inside the trans there is a lever called a pawl. Can't say why it is called that but it is suppose to wedge between gears notches inside the trans. This is suppose to lock the shaft. If the pawl lever is broke, it has no end to jam in its position. The broken part would be loose inside the trans.

I see that you were on a driveway. It could do it anywhere. Remember Driver training to hook front wheels toward downgrade hills and for the back of the front wheels to hook the curb on upgrades when parallel parking.

Even so, the Parking brakes are not that good to depend on when the trans does not lock in place. Take it somewhere to check trans linkage.

Brakes lock up on first use

This could often be to either of the following:

1) Corrosion on disks after sitting in the wet.
2) Sticking caliper slide pins or pistons.
3) Old, hardened brake pads.

Those are typically the most common cause of this type of fault, so I'd recommend checking on those first.

Parking lever stuck in park

Sometimes this can occur when you are parked on an incline you didn't use the parking brake. It can also occur under certain conditions and vehicles when the steering wheel is locked in a particular position. Try turning the steering wheel a half turn and see if that helps. Otherwise, enlist some friends to push the car up the incline slightly (just take some of the weight off) and see if that works. If neither of these tricks work, you may have something more serious, such as broken linkage or even internal damage to the transmission.

Parked on a inclined driveway so I went 2 release da car from park into 2 reverse n the shift won't move at all please help me

Sounds to me like there is too much weight on the "park" gear. Have someone push the car forward a little bit, and do it gently, to release some of the pressure on the transmission, and it should shift from Park without a problem. I highly recommend if parking on an inclined driveway, or any hill, to use the parking brake if it is possible to do so. Good Luck

When I start the car, I can't put the car in shift mode. Unless I am on a slight incline and put my emergency brake on to roll. What is the problem and how much will it cost me to fix?

Can't shift out of park because I've parked on a slight hill and my car has backed up slightly jaming the parking pawl in the automatic transmission after I have shifted into park but before I have set the parking brake. This is a complaint that Ford owners have had for years. Try this proceedure to see if this solves you problem and best of all it's Free. 1st when you park develop the habit of; while still having the foot brake down apply the park brake firmly first and then shift into park and then release the foot brake. Remember it is important to apply park brake with enough force to prevent the vehicle from rolling. What happens is in the rear of an automatic transmission there is a coarse gear that has a lever that engages this larger gear and when you shift into park range this lever goes into one of the spaces in the larger gear and stops the car from rolling. If the car starts to roll it can Jam the lever against the gear and make it difficult to shift out of park. By using the procedure I've outlined it prevents the lever OR Pawl from being jambed into the larger park gear. Try to make this a habit and you shouldn't have anymore problems.

07 chrysler sebring won't shift out of park. have console loose, but it won't come out because the shifter is in park.

Are you parked on an incline? If you are parked heading uphill, you might want to get another car behind you and give you a slight nudge forward and try to shift it out of park. If you are not parked on an incline, press the brake pedal and have someone check your brake lights, if you have no brake lights, it might have your gear shift locked. If no brake lights, check for a loose or faulty brake switch at the brake pedal, Good luck, Gary

I have a 2006 Dodge charger. I can't shift out of

Welcome to the world of broken dodge shifters... I'm a member myself BUT there's hope!
Billettechnologies.com has a replacement cog for the shifter mechanism. And there are online replacement instructions linked from their website. Dodge only sells a replacement shifter assembly.. this is cheaper and the replacement part is machine metal instead of Dodge's plastic part... It'll take some patience and tools to get at it, but it's doable..
