Transmission Isues. part 2

How can I tell if a transmission is a 4X4 or a 4X2 just by looking at it? The reason I ask is my transmission, when going up hill smells a lot as if a clutch was slipping and when going in reverse makes noises, I think my transmission is going bad. Since I don't have the $$$ to rebuild or buy new, I found a used one and all I have to go by is a picture. Any help will be appreciated. TNKS

A 4WD transmission is going to have a transfer case at one end. There's two out put shafts, one for the front drive shaft and one for the rear drive shaft.
The 2WD will not have a transfer case and only have one out put shaft for the read drive shaft.
How do you know your transmission is going bad?? Did you check the transmission fluid level and what shape it's in? You should not be able to smell any clutch burning since it's in side the transmission.
If you have a 4WD i do know that the 4WD switch in the transfer case goes bad and leaks transmission fluid out through the vacuum lines and you get the smell of oil burning when it leaks out on to anything hot like the exhaust.
If you have a extra $125.00 have them change the transmission oil and filter and ask them to test the transmission fluid pressure. As for the noise going in reverse, it may just be a bad reverse servo and there not that expensive.
I have also personally seen/fixed a 99 4L60E that had a broken reverse servo piston,it is the piece that engages the low/reverse band under a cover in the valve body area,a piston with a band engagement pin. Anyone that has this problem can have it repaired in the vehicle, its worth checking BEFORE replaceing the trans unless the fluid is burn't or there are other symptoms present.

Why won't my 2004 Chevy Impala go out of Drive I hit the gas but don't go ANY WHERE.

"go out of Drive" 'DO YOU MEAN DRIVE WAY
I THINK YES AND IS 10X MORE CLEAR

IN DRIVE SELECTED by me, CAR WILL NOT MOVE AT ALL OR OUT OF "DRIVE WAY."

THAT IS CAUSED BY 2 REASONS./
ENGINE IS WEAK, RPM NEVER GOES HIGH.
OR TRANSMISSION SLIPS, ENGINE RPM HIGH AND CAR WILL NOT MOVE,. (easy no?) RPM is the 1st clue. (engine rpm seen on tachometer or heard
and we are all deaf here.

TO FIND BAD TRANSMISSION causes IS A 100 PAGE ANSWER BUT HERE IS THE ON CAR TESTs
basics , answer here 1000 times.
ARE YOU ASKING FOR WILD GUESSING OR WANT TO DO TESTS. (or get the car serviced?)
1:CHECK TRANSMISSIONS ATF OIL LEVELS.
AND NOT TIP OF DIP stick looks like TAR or smells burned.
2: check all fuses.
3: scan the PCM OBD2 port for engine or transmission errors.
that is about it , not getting greasy or under car.
but yes step 1 in the service manual says
'check shift linkage for failures. damage etc.

How to change auto transmission fluid of ford everest

Do you have what is called a CVT transmission? CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission. Two ways to find out is 1) your shifter from bottom up says L D N R P. And 2) you have NO dipstick.
If this the case, take it to Ford and it will cost you about $500.00. Unless you have a well stocked shop, you can't do it yourself. I have one in my 2006 Freestyle. I bought it used from Ford. Actually Honda pioneered these about 15 years ago. I bought mine as I said used from a Ford dealer with 62,000 miles on it. It runs good and works well and I bought the Ford extended warantee with it. I'm telling you this for a reason. I went browsing through the included owner's manual and when I looked at the recomended service intervals, it said that the transmission change intervals were at 60.000 miles.I knew that this car had been bought new from this dealer so I called them up and asked, 1) Had this transmission ever been serviced?
(I should have asked this BEFORE I paid $16,000 cash for it.) Answer, NO 2) how much does it cost to service it. Answer, $500.00
3) Why so much? Answer, You have to pull the engine / trans.to replace the $75.00 high pressure filter among other things like the special trans. fluid
4) How will it affect my Ford warantee if I don't have it serviced? Answer, What warantee?
5) Just for laughs, how much is a replacement. Answer, $5000.00+ labor. And by the way, I didn't plan on towing anything but don't plan on it anyway. I'll be 60 next June so I can safely say that my racing days are well behind me but if you want a peppy, fast acting get up and go tranny, RUN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!!! If you drive to get where you're going and not going to jump off the line to show off, it's great. It gets good mileage for it's weight and being all wheel drive. Anything else, look the other way. I've said enough. Good luck. Jeff M. P.S. I must say it does well at the wheel chair races. Jeff M.

1996 dodge grand caravan shifts down into first when coming to a stop. After it has been drivin for a min.Stays in first gear after it slams into first from second.

It's actually putting itself into second gear. Chrysler A-604 transmissions are an electronically controlled transmission which use speed sensor to see things like vehicle speed, engine rpm, throttle position and internal transmission component speeds. It can determine if there is an issue with the transmission based on these sensors and when it does it tells the transmission to go into "limp mode" which is basically just second gear. This would allow the driver to move off the highway to the side of the road or drive it slowly for a while to a service facility. To determine the exact issue with the transmission you need to go to a shop that can read the transmission codes and decipher whether the transmission can be repaired in the vehicle or must be removed and rebuilt. It is common to have a sensor fail and cause this issue which means a reasonably low cost repair. It is also common for the trans to need complete overhaul. It IS worth it to go to a "qualified" transmission repair garage though so it can be properly diagnosed.

Good luck and hope this helps.

P.S. Did you check the fluid level first, idling in park? Had to ask.

Vehicle had a rough automatic transmission shift and erratic speedometer when vehicle warmed up. I've replaced both output and input speed sensors. Now the speedometer does not work and transmission won't...

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

Tranmission heat...

I'm going to assume you have an automatic transmission? If so, look on the passengers side of the transmission...There should be two steel lines (like fuel lines) coming from the trans, going towards the front of the vehicle. follow either of them and it should lead you to the transmission cooler. (Ordinarily inside the drivers side tank of the radiator) It is possible that someone has disconnected it from the radiator and has used an aftermarket cooler mounted somewhere at the front (usually in front of the a/c condenser. I generally use these as an "add on" to the original system, not as a "stand alone) unless the unit is exceptionally large.

Car is still drivable, but code P0700 is coming up... is this repairable??

The p0700 is a generic code for a transmission issue. If there is a Auto Zone around your area, have the car scanned for any DTC codes since it's free of charger there. Check the transmission fluid level after going for a drive to warm it up. Make sure that the transmission fluid is not low and that it's not burnt. If your due for a transmission service, take it to a transmission shop to have the transmission fluid and filter changed. Ask them to hook up the tech 2 scanner on the car to look for any DTC codes that indicates why the P0700 was triggered. Good luck and hope this helps, most transmission shop will scan for free of charger if your getting the transmission serviced there. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

Car hits hard when stepping on gas

Personally I would take it to another reputable shop in the area for a diagnosis & estimate. My guess is that the cost wouldn't be too much if anything, and then you have an expert opinion to go on, how can they dispute it ? If it's nissan warranty, call their customer service number in your manual, and get them working for you too. A Transmission or motor mount problem could also be diagnosed by a good transmission shop.
