How can I tell if a transmission is a 4X4 or a 4X2 just by looking at it? The reason I ask is my transmission, when going up hill smells a lot as if a clutch was slipping and when going in reverse makes noises, I think my transmission is going bad. Since I don't have the $$$ to rebuild or buy new, I found a used one and all I have to go by is a picture. Any help will be appreciated. TNKS
A 4WD transmission is going to have a transfer case at one end. There's two out put shafts, one for the front drive shaft and one for the rear drive shaft.
The 2WD will not have a transfer case and only have one out put shaft for the read drive shaft.
How do you know your transmission is going bad?? Did you check the transmission fluid level and what shape it's in? You should not be able to smell any clutch burning since it's in side the transmission.
If you have a 4WD i do know that the 4WD switch in the transfer case goes bad and leaks transmission fluid out through the vacuum lines and you get the smell of oil burning when it leaks out on to anything hot like the exhaust.
If you have a extra $125.00 have them change the transmission oil and filter and ask them to test the transmission fluid pressure. As for the noise going in reverse, it may just be a bad reverse servo and there not that expensive.
I have also personally seen/fixed a 99 4L60E that had a broken reverse servo piston,it is the piece that engages the low/reverse band under a cover in the valve body area,a piston with a band engagement pin. Anyone that has this problem can have it repaired in the vehicle, its worth checking BEFORE replaceing the trans unless the fluid is burn't or there are other symptoms present.
THE TAILSHAFT OF A 4x4 TRANS WILL HAVE A LARGE FLANGE THAT A TRANSFER CASE ATTACHES TO.
