Transmission will not go or stay in overdrive

You should always drive in drive when under 45 mph. Overdrive is for the highway only. Using overdrive in stop and go street traffic will cause the overdrive to quit working and eventually ruin transmission. Take to Aamco transmission shop for free diagnosis.

strange as it may sound, transmissions do not shift into overdrive to pass
they down shift a ratio to get extra torque from the motor and will stay down shifted until the vacuum actuator shifts it back and only then when the VSS reports to the TCM that a ratio change up is needed will the overdrive click in

some modles have vacume to transmission.you mave have a problem with overdrive module.but in the same lines missing or disconnected will cause problems.

Overdrive flashing probably means that overdrive has been disabled due to a detected problem such as overheating. i would get it checked out.

The problem is that either the wiring harness going to the overdrive control motor has chafed and is shorting out, or the overdrive control motor is bad. Check out the wiring harness VERY carefully, if it's OK replace the control motor.

Time for an overhaul on the transmission or replacement. 4L60's are notoriious for the overdrive clutch to give the "hail mary".
Try replacing the transmission filter first.

The torque converter lock up solonoid is bad. This is an internal transmission part that requires partial transmission disassembly. Most times its cheaper to put a good used transmission in.

The button itself may be bad. If the button is ok, then the problem could be in the transmission control module located behind the dash or worse, it could be an internal problem with the transmission itself. I would start small by checking or replacing the panel that includes the overdrive button. The easiest and cheapest place to get one is a salvage or junk yard. If this doesn't solve the problem then it is best to take your Jeep to certified mechanic. When it comes to the Grand Cherokee, they used around 5 or 6 different transmissions and several different transmission control modules. I wouldn't recommend the do-it-yourself guy try working on those systems. I Just recently replaced the transmission in my 93 Cherokee and finding a used one that was actually the right model was like looking for a needle in a haystack
