It is possible that the shifter cable is not allowing full engagement of the gear. You may have to put it on a hoist to access the cable from underneath

SOURCE: My 2002 Taurus wont go into gear

I have almost 30 years rebuilding transmission, use to own an AAMCO, the number one trans of all time that I have rebuilt have been the taurus. It is not your shift solenoid, it would still move and have reverse (reverse does not use a solenoid. The shifter cable could be a problem but I doubt it. It would be very loose if it was broken.

Check your fluid level running and not running, If it si the same level, your pump failed. In any event you probably are looking at a Major repair.

I have an 06 kia spectra, manuel, and it goes in every gear but fifth?

There could be several reasons why your Kia Spectra is not shifting into fifth gear. Some potential causes include a faulty shift cable, a damaged fifth gear synchronizer, or a problem with the transmission itself.

1994 ford ranger, My stick wont go into fifth gear position.

When you put the Shift Handle back into the TOP of the transmission, there is a spring on the Top and it that comes loose, it would cause this.

BTW... it happened to me

Pull the Stick UP, Clean the Ball, make sure all the parts are there and that the spring that you push against is there and reinstall

1991 Honda Civic DX Why am I able to push the car with automatic transmission while it's in park? The car won't start and run, either.

If the car rolls with the shifter in the park position and the starter will not engage the engine than the transmission is not in park. This could be caused by a bad shift cable. In order to confirm this you will need to find the area where the shift cable attaches to the transmission. While a helper runs the shifter through the gears check the linkage at the transmission to see if it is moving. If the linkage is not moving that there is a problem with the shift cable or the shifter. Some disassembly of the center council may be necessary to gain access to the area where the shift cable attaches to the shifter to see if it is still attached to the shifter. If it is and the shifter is moving the cable than the cable will need to be replaced. If the cable is moving the linkage at the trans than there is probably something wrong internally inside of the transmission. If you have any questions or need further help I will be happy to do what I can!

Our Isuzu Fuego LS 4x2 Manual Transmission doesn't move even the shift stick is already palced in First Gear, even in second gear and third gear and fifth gear also no reverse, to sum up only 4th gear will...

you may have a shaft key broken in the transmission. 4th is usually 1-1 drive and does not need the key. before removing the transmission, check to make sure the linkage is OK by shifting gears at the transmission. If you can get other gears at the transmission, then the problem is the shifter.

My car is stuck in second gear, the stick shift is just flopping back and forth. I can not change gears so I am driving with my hazards on and 20mph in second gear. Any thoughts

Is it a stick shift or auto tranny?

If stick shift then the shift fork may be bent thus why it's stuck or

A tranny mount is bad causing the tranny to lean on the shifter mechanism

Or you need a clutch adjustment.

1997 pontiac sunfire manual transmission won't shift out of gear.

What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.

Shifter physically won't move into reverse position

To isolate the problem as either an internal transmission problem,or external to the transmission,(shifter or cable malfunction),the shifter cables should be disconnected from the transmission. On the transmission are two levers,if you have a 5 speed trans. One is the neutral gate lever, and the other is actual gear shift lever.Manipulating the levers manually, see if the transmission will engage into Reverse gear.If the transmission engages into Reverse gear, then the problem is either in the shifter mechanism itself,or the shift cables. If the transmission will not engage into Reverse gear, then the problem is either an internal problem,or possibly a switch seized up,like the reverse gear indicator switch. At this point,i would have an assistant sit in the car, engine off,and run through all the gear selections with the shifter, while watching and looking for a cable not operating to its full stroke.Take the console apart to access the shifter mechanism and visually inspect the assembly.Disconnect the cables and operate them manually, one at a time, while an assistant watches them underhood.Visually inspect the shifter and it's mechanism for a broken, cracked,or damaged component. At this point, the problem should be identified and repaired as either cable or shifter malfunction.

My sunfire is not shifting properly....

I had a similar problem except i could shift to first and third and fifth but not 2nd or 4th or reverse. the only thing that came to my mind was new transmission but that is not the case. It was a way i could but it was so frustrated. I am certain it is the shifting cables. The name of the part you need to get is TRANSMISSION SHIFTING CABLES. Only the dealership has them, about $200.00 got them and installed but a certified mechanic. I have no problems shifting into any gear at all. Hope this information helps.
