Won't go into gear to drive. may be transmission?

2001 Kia Sportage manual transmission. 92,000 miles.
I was driving down the hwy and in 5th gear and my gear started grinding loudly and became disengaged. I shifted into 4th gear to continue driving and was able to drive off the hwy to a conveneient store to get off road. I asked a guy to look at it and he drove it and 4th gear stopped working as well. Now the vehicle won't engage into any of the gears or reverse. When I put my clutch in, the car will shift into gear, but as I release the clutch, there is a very loud shrill noise that sounds like grinding gears. It won't drive and I'm just trying to figure out what happened and how I can go about fixing it. Thanks!!

If the clutch has never been changed most likely it is that. The way you can check it is by removing the transmission and looking at the clutch disc. It could be transmission syncros but I am willing to bet you just need a new clutch.

Kia sportage transmission

MANUAL well their is only one in my eyes and that is EP90 front or rear wheel drive type manual gearbox although some older cars from the 50s specified engine oil like the morris /austin ranges even the old ford consuls could have this before the gears started to have syncromesh and helical cut gears ,showing my age here i think ?cars with no syncomesh ?? rod brakes and worm and wheel diff units .

I have a 97 kia sportage with 160,000.miles ,stick shift, ......when shifting from 4th to 5th its hard to get into 5th and ill put in 3rd my mistake...is this a ezay fix ?

Sounds like ther is a selector problem in the gear box. Take off the top, where the gear lever goes in and have a look. if there is anything wrong there the box will have to come out.

2001 kia sportage . transmission does not change

Popular Problems Checks
1. Car will not go into gear:
  • Gear selector cable has failed
  • Brake lock solenoid/brake light swtich has failed not allowing the gear selector to move out of "Park"
  • Excessively low transmission fluid (note: if car is operated for an extended amount of time with low fluid level the transmission will fail prematurely)
  • Shorted electrical component not allowing the PCM to control the transmission. Example: shorted fuse
  • Flex plate (flywheel) is broken completely not transferring engine power to the transmission.
2. Car goes into gear but then fades out of gear or is slipping while driving:
  • Transmission fluid is low
  • Transmission clutch discs or bands are worn out or burned
  • Faulty transmission shift solenoid.
3. Car goes into gear but does not shift out of first:
  • Blown fuse to the PCM controller
  • Faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
  • Shorted second gear control solenoid
  • Faulty transmission controller (PCM)

How do i put my 1998 sportage in four wheel drive

If it is automatic transmission you must stop vehicle put it in neutral or "n" then put shifter that is indicates 2h 4h and 4L pull down to 4h if you are driving on highway or pull down then over and up to 4L if you are not going to be driving faster than 30mph.
If manual put in neutral also and do the same process as automatic there will be a light on dash board indicating that it is in 4wd also put transmission back to drive on automatic or shift to first gear on manual

Manual Transmission stick jammed after BRAKE Light ON for a day. 2002 Kia Sportage ONLY drives in 4th gear. Mechanic says Brake Fluid in Kia Sportage Lubes and Cools Manual Transmission? Might have gone...

Need more info on what the trans is doing , or not doing. No chance that brake fluid cools or lubes your transmission. The only possible connection is that your clutch is hydraulic which would use brake fluid , but two totaly different systems. Does your clutch feel funny?
