Yes, you should be able to use the key to unlock the rear hatch of your 2009 Equinox even if the car battery is dead. The lock cylinder for the rear hatch is likely located on the outside of the hatch itself, or it may be located on the door handle. To unlock the hatch with the key, insert the key into the lock cylinder and turn it clockwise. If the key won't turn or the hatch won't open, you may need to wiggle the key or apply more pressure to unlock the hatch. If the key won't go into the lock cylinder at all, it is possible that the lock is frozen or damaged and will need to be repaired or replaced. You may also be able to use the manual release for the rear hatch, which is usually located inside the vehicle, near the driver's side door or on the underside of the dashboard.
There are lock unfreezer sprays also available. If it were an outside lock, I'd recommend a little wee-wee
as an emergency measure, but not inside. How about warming the key with a heat source then inserting into the frozen lock?
This sounds like theres a problem with the latch or the linkage. the first thing would be to get the door open but lets hold off on that for now. Use the key and t ry to lock and unlock the door and see if you can, then try to lock and unlock the door using the button, let me know if it can lock and unlock. this test is to see if maybe the lock actuator is frozen. a frozen actuator will not allow you to unlock the door from inside or with a key but if you can lock and unlock then there maybe another problem. take note as you move the lock button make sure it moves up and down all the way or if it fells tight, if irs fine then the next step is to try and get the door open or remove the door panel to get inside the door. this may be hard but can be done. try pushing on door and pulling on handle to try and open door. Another trick is to try and hold lock button in unlock postion and hold with a little force while pulling on handle to open the door.
Give the locking "jaws" a good dose of WD-40 and start with a pair of pliers ans working the door handle get the "jaws" moving and work it a lot while keep dousing it with the lubricant. Worst case scenario would be that the spring that opens the jaws is broken and will need replaced. Please rate this answer, thanks.
The key should work even if there is no battery in vehicle. Have you tried both doors (or all doors with locks) Do you live where the temp is below freezing - could be frozen shut or locks frozen?
take a pitcher of hot wtaer out to one of the doors and pour the hot water starting at the top of the door and you should be able to open the door , now if the key lock is frozen use a lighter and heat the key up first then put the key in the lock and turn the key to unlock the door
