1995 volvo 850 station wagon..how do I change out a non working odometer/trip meter? please keep it simple for a non mechanical type of guy
Roy7777 - there is nothing metal that is broken to solder in this situation.
over time, the plastic gear that drives the odometer and trip meter gets brittle and will break a few teeth if you push the trip reset button with the car moving.
you have to remove the cluster, but after that, it is a pretty straight forward repair. you can get the replacement gear from ipd or fcpgroton, ipd has an available DVD with step by step instructions if you buy the gear from them: http://ipdusa.com/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=0&P_ID=406&strPageHistory=search&numSearchStartRecord=1
sure beats ~$300 for the dealer to send off the speedometer for "refurbishing"
This has been a problem with VOLVO especially the 850 models what happens is the plastic senssor inside the speedometer breaks off and it will tell you the road speed but ODOMETER AND TRIP METER will not work and the only way to fix it is to take the cluster out and sometimes it can be soldered back in place or get a used cluster and replace the unit sorry but it is not a simple fix
