If you have a coolant or antifreeze mixed with the water, you should see a trace of the coolant on the motor, where it is leaking. check water hose clamps and water pump. if the water pump is leaking slowly, it has failed and will break within time. any coolant leak will cause your car engine to overheat.

They make a Radiator pressure tester which will put pressure in the system so you can see where the leak is coming from.

If heater core is leaking coolant will this cause engine to over heat?

Yes it can, the coolant leaks from the heater core, and causes the engine to lose coolant. The sad part is, if your heater core in underneath your dashboard, you will have coolant in the floorboard.

I have coolant leaking from underneath my 1998 Chevrolet Lumina

Water pump is located in the center of the left side. If you remove the plate you mentioned, you can probably see it. It is probably the source of the leak. The seals are prone to go bad in them.
