Engine speed will not rev over 4000rpm

I own a 316i, 1999model. when I put my foot down on the gas pedal sharply, The rev counter will not show over 4000 rpm, but if I gradually increase the speed it will show max. rpm. But in practise, the car will not pick up speed, when a sharp acceleration is needed! Please tell me what to look for. It felt if there is a starvation of fuel. i have a 1993 318i, the engine misfires badly once i go to 4500rpm and loses all power, i have changed the filters, plugs and leads but it is no better! once i let off the throttle it eventually clears and runs fine, any help please! I have the same problem in my 2001 bmw 325i it wont rev past 4000 rpm

Take it to a mechanic to check the timing. if the timing is off then it may run at a idle an a little above but once you rev it up then the timing will truely show an it will run like ****. have you checked your air filter that may be another cause. hope this helps

Sounds like a fuel filter issue. If the filter is clogged or is getting to the point where it's going to be clogged badly the amount of fuel going to the engine will be restricted. This would cause your stated problem. Theoretically there isn't much of a need to go over 4000 rpm unless you are racing with the car but I think most bimmer owners can understand where you are coming from:) As far as the 1993, I'd check all your intake piping and vacuum lines and make sure there are no leaks whatsoever. An easy way to check is to have the car running and spray carb cleaner on the intake piping and such and see if your revs increase, if they do you've got a leak. Hope this helps! I'd be glad to help with any other questions you might have a please don't forget to rate me.

Engine rev high by its self

The most common causes of this are a engine vacuum leak and a sticking idle speed control air bypass valve.

check your transmission fluid levels and add if low..also using a white paper towel, wipe some fluid off the stick and see if any contamination is present like blackened gunk and aluminum shavings..this is a sign that the fluid and filter need changed..

Engine will turn over, but car will not stay cranked.

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ?
It uses an idle control valve to adjust the idle speed. The valve could be dirty or failing, or the throttle body could be dirty.

WHEN DRIVING AND THE TRANS NEEDS TO SHIFT ON MY 2005 VW JETTA 2.5-5 NEW STYLE THE RPM'S REV UP BRIEFLY THEN THE TRANS WILL SHIFT THE SHIFTING IS SMOOTH BUT THE HIGH RPMS WORRY ME.

when vw started to use the computer controlled gearbox system a criticism was the shift was very harsh,to counter this they made it rev slightly before changing.so that you know the system, try this out....without touching the gas.....put it in d and let the car accelerate to its max speed, stop, then use 1/3rd of gas (keep your foot still)and let it do the same...stop,then,if safe, put your foot to the floor, hard, notice when the car changes gear(revs/speed)then if you drive, only using the first1/3rd of the gas,the cars change pattern will alter to suit.......wierd it is.....

Bout a week after getting my 2009 crv i noticed every time i let off the accelerator the car will appear to downshift sometimes it is quite a rough downshift it has done this for the last 8 months. Dealeri...

the car is fitted with a fuzzy logic gearbox, computer controlled within the engine management system.it will try to make you drive as economically as possible taking into account the gas pedal possition/road speed and load.it will also adapt to your driving skills.
so if you drive in town all the time it will change at higher revs and out of town, if you accelerate gently, lower down the rev range.Try this.without using the gas pedal put the car in drive and let the car do the work,it will accelerate on its own upto 4th gear.
then try again, from stop, keeping your foot about 1/3rd down on the gas and let the car do the work try not to move your foot.then, if you can, drive using only a max of 1/3rd gas pedal all the time and you will find within 100 miles the car has adapted to this and your gas mileage will go thru the roof. also the car will adapt to high grade gas.adjusting engine output to match.
