Engine stalling My dodge aries is a 1988 with about 55,000 miles on it. It has been running great til the last few days. Now it will crank up ok, but then dies. And as long as it is moving it is ok till you have to stop then it dies again. The engine light has been coming on to. What can I do to fix it?

Hello doncoth...very low mileage for an 88 aries and i doubt that anything serious is going on.
In 88 these engines were carbureted, not fuel injected & majority of the stalling problems were fuel system related on these cars,
like a broken or split vacuum hoses allowing air to be sucked into the intake manifold. Unmetered air changes the fuel mixture, and can cause a stalling problem..
Since the check engine light is coming on we need to find out what the trouble codes are.
To get the codes, put the key in the ignition and turn the key to the "run" position until all the dash lights come on (DO NOT START) Have your paper and pen ready to take notes.
Turn key back "off",then to "run" again,"off" again and then back to "run " and leave it there.....The check engine light will begin flashing....It will flash a 2 digit code....For instance,2 blinks followed by a pause, then 1 more blink would be code "21"....The last code displayed will be 55 (test is over) From that information we can determine the cause of the condition. The codes can be read here>>>> http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes/index.html the list is at the bottom of the page. Let me know what you find. I'll be glad to help you.
Good luck and i hope this helps.

1998 Dodge Dakota 5.2. It starts and runs great for about 5 miles then stalls.

For 5 miles it is running on choke. Try cleaning the Throttle Body and MAF.

If that doesn't work, you need an auto electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer. It can record exactly what goes wrong at 5 miles and diagnose the fault.

It appears to be a known fault

Sounds very much like catalytic is fouled, blocked.. Works fine when cold, then bogs down and even stalls when heats up. May start and idle but wont go when you press gas.
Did this come on worse over a couple three days? I would get the cat checked for flow.

I would check the vacuum lines thoroughly as one may have collasped or previous owner replaced with a substandard one, which may be partially collaspe then upon warming up will vacuum itself shut causing the motor to surge then fail to run or start if it happens to be a main line that is affected.
