Temp gauge bouncing up an down

Just today I was driving down the highway in my 91 accord and my temp guage started to act erratically, it jumped up to hot and was bouncing around from noramal to hot back to normal very quickly but the engine didnt seem like it was overheating. Now that the car has cooled down the gauge still reads hot. Does anyone know what this could be?

Hey fellas thanx for the advice, I appreciate it. Dont hink you could tell me which one it is could ya? They both have two wires coming out of them, one has a black and blue wire and the other has a black and white wire coming out of it. One is significantly harder to get to as well. Also is it safe to drive like this, thanx again.

I would say if the fluid is full and the thermostat is not sticking it would be your engine coolant temperature sensor (ect) sensor

That vehicle has two coolant temp sensors on it, both are on the passengers side of the end of the head, where the thermostat housing is. One has a two wire plug, this one tells your fans to come on the other is one single pin, this one is for your temp gauge. This sensor works off resistance, the higher the resistance the higher the gauge in the car goes. This sensor has probably grounded out and pegged your gauge in the car. Replace that sensor and you should be good to good, not too expensive either. Good luck.

I'm sorry I forgot about the third sensor, the two you are looking at are one is for the fans, the black one if I remember correctly, and the other is the sensor for the ECM so it knows how to fire the injectors. there should be one below these with one single wire going to it thats the gauge wire. Disconnect it and if your gauge is still pegged it should go to cold. As far as running like that no it won't hurt anything, but that's a gauge you definitley want working in that car.

My van is possessed....guages and other things flickering erratically

Could be a bad battery cable or connection, including the ground cables.

What would cause temperature gauge bouncing ?

Sounds like the sending unit has an intermittent short to ground. Unhook the the wire from the sending unit, and see if the needle stops jumping around. If it quits jumping around, replace the sending unit. If it still jumps around, you have a bare spot somewhere on the wire and it is hitting ground which will cause the needle to jump. Cut out the bad part of the wire and splice in a new section. That should fix it.

Coolant temp guage jumps from C to H

If that is a manual gauge it sounds like the gauge may be the problem. If its electronic, you may have air caught in the cooling system. I'll bet u its a manual gauge & its NG. LOL good luck

Erratic temp guage but not overheating

Probably the sending unit, and cost about $30.
The test of the gauges is to remove wire from sending unit and watch gauge go to lowest, then ground the wire and watch it go to highest.
If it does, then not a problem with gauge. So must be sending unit.

Jetta 2003 TDI

My mechanic in our town did a quick computer check. Car computer indicated a low level of antifreeze, he topped it up, cleared all messages off the car computer and said to watch the the heat guage for any further irregularities. I'll keep an eye on it, love the car, great mileage fun to drive.

1990 honda accord rpm gauge out of wack

You probably have a faulty sensor at the transmission.

Go to your local parts store, and they can give you the part and how to install it. It's pretty easy.
