Third brake light works but two on rear dont.

I have a 1994 GMC half ton extended cab and my third brake light is working but the rear two do not. I have changed the turn signal switch and the brake light switch. I have rear parking lights as well as turn signals, and my hazards work. When you turned the flashers on before and pushed the brake pedal they would stop flashing they do not now and only brake light that is working is the third breaklight. I am at a loss noone seems to know what the problem could be... HELP

Ok well after alot of scratching my head and alot of help from my dad we got it. As I said i had replaced the turn signal switch and brakelight switch with still no luck. As it would turn out there is a relay under the hood that the power must run through before it ever makes it to the turn signal switch. The third brake light was working because it apparently runs directly from the brakelight switch, but the back two run through the relay and then through the turn signal switch. All in all the relay was bad, a 28 dollar relay but I now have brake lights in the rear which is a plus. Thanks and I hope that this will help someone else in the future.

Thanks for the posting. My son and I have been trying to figure out the EXACT same problem on a 1998 chevy p/u. Haven't bought the relay yet, but after reading you posting, I pretty sure it will work. Thanks again for sharing. By the way, the brake switch on our truck is a bear to remove, let alone change.

Where exactly is this relay located?

  • gerry bissi May 11, 2010

must be the splice where it splits off to the high mount lamp and the tail lamp brake lights.

Is there a fuse for the third brake light 2001 GMC 1500 4x4 crew cab?

no it uses the same circuit the brake lights run off of. if the brake lights on the rear of the truck work and not the 3rd brake light then replace the bulb, check power and ground at the bulb socket.

95 gmc c1500 third brake lite works but cargo won't

The cargo light will only work if the lights in the cab are on. Turn them on then flip the switch for the cargo light and it should come on, if not then it is probably an electrical problem.

I have a 1995 GMC Sierra an the third eye brake light comes on but the other brake light dont work

Could be both bulbs have burned out at once. Or could be the brake light switch. The third brake light and the normal brake lights operate seperatly. Or could be the wires.

My brake lights arent working but my emergency flashers are. would that be a fuse or a wiring problem?

if the third brake light is working and the left and right brake lights are not than the most likely problem is the turn signal multifunction switch.

If the third brake light is also not working and the bulb is good than check the brake light switch located above the brake pedal under the dash. There should be power on one wire all the time. There should be another wire that powers up with the brake pedal depressed. If no wires power up with the pedal depressed than the switch is bad.

I can get you specific wire information if you need it. Just let me know.

Brake lights dont work, fuse good ,bulbs good, third light works

The third brake light switch works off a module for it is a sealed unit with a inverter that takes 12 volts beefing the voltage to 110 volts for the light emitting diode lights in it. It these terms you will need a new brake light switch located by the brake pedal

I have a chevy s 10 brake lights don't work

Brake light relay is bad. It is the third solenoid from the left on top of firewall under hood. If this is bad, the third (cab top) brake will still work fine, but no rear brake lights!

My third brake light dosen't work on my chevy s10 94'

I had a similar problem with my 1994 S-10 LS extended cab. Both tail brake lights worked fine. I removed the 3rd brake light cover and tested for voltage at the steel center of the two rivets and found the positive (driver side) negative (passenger side) were good. I checked the two metal strips that send power to bulbs and found the positive side was open. Seems the flared side of the rivet was not making contact with the metal strip. I bucked the rivet with a punch and hammer and it took care of the problem.
