Service 4wd dash light comes on when I go into auto 4 and will switch back to 2wd until I shut the engine off.

I have a 99 chevy tahoe 4X4 5.7. My service 4wd dash light comes on when I put my truck in auto 4. I drive about 150 - 200 feet and the light comes on and will not switch back into 2wd. I have to shut the engine off and then start it holding in the 2wd button. It also seems to go into 4wd in auto 4 with out any sense of slipping or spinning of the tires. I replaced the transfer case 1 yr ago and always thought that after the replacement the 4wd was mucked up. Could it be the transfer case? I have had it looked at 2 or 4 times and everything looks great. HELP!

    4 button switch on dash wont light up anymore after i replaced transfer case.replaced tccm and encoder motor still nothing switch worked up till first transfer case broke service 4wd light dont come on either

Sound like problems in transfer case shift module.

    Try replacing the dash mounted selector switch. Chevy has had problems with their soldering over the years (ie. the wiper control module). I have a 98 Tahoe that was doing the same exact thing, replaced the dash selector switch and all is good in the world.

Well it could be the selector switch, but I doubt it.
Generally, the service light means something is not working that the computer controls. Solenoids and valves are a couple of possibilities.
The transfer case is shifted by solenoids commanded by the body computer based on the switch position on the dash.
You should be able to have a shop scan the body computer for trouble codes and proceed from there.
A basic code reader may not access the body computer.

Sounds like the encoder switch is bad ..it on the transfer case .it has a motor with wires going to it.when you press the button it sends a signal to that motor to switch into a certain gear..

The lights come on when the 4wd is deactivated by pcm. check the speed sensors for debris built up on it.

The Service 4wd light used to go on and off
Drive in circles, one direction then the other and it should come out...Gears get preloaded and will remain so until this load is released...

The engauge/disengauge control does not have power to overcome gear preload.

Does the 4-wheel drive work ? Most of the time, it is a reminder to have your fluid changed. Other times, it could be a vacuum leak in the line that engages the 4-wheel drive. Check both of those first.
