Question about Volkswagen Beetle
You should look into getting another mechanic. He could have figured out if any of those things had a problem before replacing. He should have compression tested it and tested the radiator flow which would have answered his question without replacement. Water pump, Thermostat, and radiator are the only things to replace. If for any reason someone put some form of stop leak or any crud in the radiator it could clog a water jacket in the block but even that creates hot spots and shouldnt cause it to over heat. The restriction of flow has to be fairly great in a radiator to cause over heating. I'd start with a new mechanic, because you've been ripped off. I bet next you're going to need to replace the motor which would also be a LIE!

Hi it mite be that the water pumps impeller is made of plastic on these models an they break up after time (very common on audis an vw same engines)and dont pump the water effectivley the car constantley over heat.the solution is to but a pump wid a metal impeller ive had the same problem on my audi a3 turbo..also changing the thermostat is an option...hope this helps

Head gasket for sure would cause it to smoke and get hot. May seem like a stupid question, but did they check the thermostat? If head gaskets are good now and radiator was replaced, look for the obvious. Thermostat or air bound engine. An air pocket in the engine could also cause this. Need to bleed the air out of the cooling system. Some cars have a bleed screw to do this.
