Slow gage response for the alternator. Is the alternator finished?

When I start my 2000 Ram3500 the alternator gage only slowly rises to full output(14v). It used to pop right up. One time, the first time , the check gages light came on too. Now it works but I'm worried that it will quit altogether. The van has a Roadtrek conversion. I can have it rebuilt but I'll have to remove it and may need tips on that too. - Don

I'd suspect that the gauge is just tired. Check the voltage at the battery with a multi meter while the engine is running. At idle, if you are anywhere near 14V (13.8-14.5) you are fine.

I don't have a solution to the problem, but another question.  Do you need to have a mechanic pressure test?

SOURCE: dash problem

This is caused by a problem with the BCM (body control module), do the following, if that doesn't reset the BCM then u will need to have the dealer replace and program a new BCM.

Open your hood and look for the fuse and relay center just above the battery. Open the cover and look for a fuse called IOD and/or Memory IOD. It usually located away from the front (towards the top of the block) in the center, they are labeled . Remove the IOD fuse for 20 seconds and then reinsert. The BCM becomes hung and this will reset it in a lot of cases. Let us know how it works out

Check all of your dash fuses inside the glove box if these are fine. Remove the door panel nd check to see that the wires have not come loose they tendto come loose from closing the rear door.

Check the ground wire from the engine to the firewall. It is a flat braided uncoated wire and should be easy to distinguish. Make sure that it is clean and tight.

Starting Problem

Fully charge the battery and see if it starts like it should. If your battery is fully charged, but still turns over slowly, its your starter. If using a fully charged battery solves your problem, its your alternator.

check the earth lead connections to the engine from the car body, undo them, clean them up, and re assemble, then check the electric connectors to the starter motor the same way, check also plug connector is securely pushed into back of alternator.
Another thing to note, you mentioned the lights slowly dimmed after fitting new battery, this could indicate a major short circuit. good luck, P

The temperature gage is slow rising like it normally does.

Sounds to me like you have a bad thermostat. If you know how to change it you can give it a shot. If you dont know what I'm talking about, take your car in to a mechanic and tell em to have a look at your thermostat.
