Does a 2001 chevy cavalier have a timing belt?

My father said to check with my mechanic about changing the timing belt on my 2001 chevy cavalier. The mechanic told me it didn't have a timing chain - are we talking about the same thing?

You have a timing chain, don't have to change it like you do a belt.

Your car has a timing belt and it has a inspection cover to check it . at around 100,000 miles it is a good idea to replace it .

I have had to replace my timing belt 4 times within the last 3 to 4 years is that common. To the point it was under warrenty twice when it had to be taken back into the shop. i drive a 2001 chevy cavalier

no thats not common at all, unless your driving 75k miles a year or more, what ever dealer or mechanic did the work before ,,, take it back to them and ask why this keeps happening, its defiantly not normal

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. Does it have a timing belt or a timing chain? At what milage should I change the timing belt/timing chain? Thank you.

It has a timing chain. The timing chain which is not a timing belt usually does not get changed because it is much stronger to with stand the engines torgue not like the belt which has to replaced every 50 to 60 thousand miles so timing chains do not have to be replaced unless there is something internally that is giving the chain some problems but usually not in most cases.

I have a leak of antifreeze under the car and am thinking it might be the water pump leaking. Where is the water pump located on a 2001 chevy cavalier Z24?

whichever side of the motor you see the drive belts on.

Ford puts theirs on the passenger side but I see gm stuff on the drivers side too.

pop the hood and look for the drive belts. It is either drivin by one of these belts OR off the timing belt under the timing belt cover.

Wow, thats a tough one! Even after the cars been hot, it should start a couple hours later...if not...my guess is you've got the car knocked out of "time" somehow. Time to take it to the mechanic :O(

1996 Chevy Cavalier

your car does not have a timing belt it has a chain. but yes if the pump is driven by timing belt and it starts leaking the coolant gets on belt and it will fail. if your car has the 2.4 engine the water pump runs off of the timing chain and depending on mileage it would be smart to go ahead and replace it since it will be tore down anyway will save on labor
