Wrong power steering Fluid - 2004 Hyundai Elantra

no history, why did you add fluid? ( it dont just go away. by self)
did you use the wrong fluid, Jeeps use very special fluid
if you use the wrong fluid or mix them (10x worse that) it will fail.
call jeep and ask them what is the correct fluid.
i once did it wrong (thanks to NAPA lies) and used the wrong fluid,
at he time there was no after market fluid for jeeps.
i had to go to jeep. and buy it.

I would drain your power steering pump, even if I had to take it off and dump the fluid! Yes, you do need to use power steering fluid, but what will get you in the most trouble is if you mix your fluids because then they work against each other.

While some people will use transmission fluid in a power steering pump in an emergency, I always recommend they drain it out and use the proper fluid in the proper place.

I hope you don't have permanent damage from using the wrong fluid. There are several different types of power steering fluid and they are not necessarily compatible. I would have a shop flush the system and refill with the specified fluid.

If the power steering fluid has turned white. There is air mixing in it. The level has probably gone too low. It also may be contaminated by now. There are other things that can be wrong but first, try the following.
Get a large basting syringe with a rubber ball on the end. Use it to remove the fluid from the power steering resevouis. As much as you can. Then put Fresh Fluid in. Run the engine and repeat removeing the old fluid and then put new fresh fluid in. Top off the fluid and run the engine. See if your power steering pump starts to work.

This is wrong!!!! This will destroy your car. The power sterring fluid say ATF only, putting power sterring in it will destroy the steering.

Air in the line. Be sure the steering fluid level is up to the fill line.

Turn the wheel to the stops both ways a couple times.

Check the level again.

Repeat until the level remains static,

I thought the cobalt uses Electronic Steering Assist and does require power steering fluid.

If I'm wrong, then there will be a cap on the reservoir tank usually next to your brake fluid tank will say "Power Steering Fluid" right on it

i would check the power steering fluid level. if thats ok. then i would bet its your power steering pump. other possibilities although rare are :
if its power assisted rack and pinion, rack may need to be replaced if its damaged or corroded on the inside. or could be a pinched hose in the power steering hose routing. Wrong fluid in the power steering pump (causing the valves to swell shut) this happens when quick lube places put the wrong fluids in the wrong places. ( i went to one and they put the wrong fluid in my brakes and had to have my master cylinder replaced and brake system flushed... yes they denied it still cost me 350.00) also could be damaged suspension parts causing the resistance to your steering. hope this gives you some leads to find out whats up.
