Problem started by shifter not going D position and D light on dash not lighting although all others lit fine when shifter was in their positions. Had to put shifter in 2 then slide up to D to get on D-drive position. Now cannot get into P position to start car - it clicks but it's not really in P because car can move. So now it's not starting because can't get in P. I can move shifter by pressing auto lock -- but I don't think it's really in P-park anyway since wheels move freely. Brake lights work fine. Drives and shifts fine - when I can start it. It seems like a progressive mechanical problem -- any ideas?
Sounds like the parking pawl in the transmission or the manual shift valve is sticking or the manual linkage in the trans is bent. youll have to have a technician drop the trans pan and observe these parts with an assistant shifting the lever in the car back and forth. If the PRNDL light for park is not lit, then the vehicle is not completely in park. You can start and vehicle with the lever in NEUTRAL to get you anywhere.

Found blowen altanator fuse which is located under the hood fuse box.

that hold it in placse.
Your shifter is a column shifter, not a floor shifter, right? Is the headlight switch mounted on the steering column? If so, then this "combination switch" may be the problem. If not, start looking for loose wires, especially ground wires, around the steering column area and the headlight switch area.
It would also be a good idea to get access to a wire diagram from a factory repair manual and find out if GM had any Technical Service Bulletins addressing this problem. If I get a chance, I will ask around and see if any of my co-workers ever heard of this problem.
