I have a matiz SE (not listed!!), I need to replace the engine and have a replacement available. My question is, do I need to remove it with the gearbox or is there enough clearance to get it out with the gearbox in place?
Yes it can be done. I removed the battery and tray and gearbox mount only then was able to wriggle the motor out (after removing sarter, alternator, power steering and air con compressor). Also removing the plastic cover near the front pulley helped. Need small hands! Good luck!
When you remove the gearbox mount be sure to use an adequate support below it, also don't remove the lower gearbox support it can be left in place without problem. You should also the remove exhaust collector and catalytic converter and to have a little more play remove the oil filter. The engine support on the right-hand side should be removed entirely (below the ABS controller), to do that remove all supports around it (ABS, steering and AC lines). Once loosened you can move the support forward and remove it.
Btw, it's a good idea to replace the clutch once the engine is out, takes little time and saves having to remove the engine again once worn. Be sure to center the plate correctly at mount.
