When I opened the sunroof it went all the way back and made a few popping sounds. So, I closed it and it closed ok and then lifted up and now nothing is working at all? I just need to get it closed until I can get it fixed... Any ideas?
Take off the panel with the sunroof button on it there should be a hex wrench in there, there is also a hex fitting, turn this to maually close the sunroof. If the hex wrench is missing you can use any hex wrench that will fit.

One night, while driving my 2000 E46 3-Series BMW 323i, I tried to open my sunroof, and heard an omnious loud crunch; it sounded as if my sunroof had ...
if you have an allan key there is a bypass to close it manually, there is an access panel under sunroof motor, take off and it will expose a allen key hole
To manually closed you remove the panel that houses the sunroof button and you'll see the motor which has a hex hole in the center that you can turn clockwise direction with a hex socket, to close it.
might try spraying white lithium grease on the slides and open and close few times my g6 did the same thing grease it and open and closed a few times then it work
could be a few things, firstly the fuse for the sunroof, secondly some have a small relay next to the motor near the sunroof. if the switch for the sunroof is on the roof pop it out of the trim or unscre it if it is fixed with screws, check the wiring looks right if still wont close then simply unplug the wires off the back of the switch, tel me how many wires you have and the colours, you can attach 2 toghether and this will close the sunroof if the switch is the part that has failed, Always check fuses first!
There is no way or closing it manually sorry unless you have various BMW tools. The problem sounds like the electric motor went out on it. Its located right above where all your interior lights are. Pop the cover of for the lights and try tapping on the motor while your trying to close it with a small hammer lightly to see if you can get it close. Another thing that happens alot on the E 36 is that the plastic aliging pins on the rails will brake over time with use and than this will cause the sun roof to get stuck open or partially close. This will be the case if you ever heard a loud snap.
press and hold the sunroof button, the sunroof will open and close (full cycle) then stop, this resets the sunroof system, hope this helps. let me know
Sunroof won't open or close.
