Yesterday while driving I reckon that my mazda mpv 1999, diesel 4WD was overheating. Upon examining today I found out that the water-tank was exploding. what could have caused it?

The reason is the water pump is driven off the timing belt, extra parts and allot more labor. No the eng does not have to be removed, labor time around 4 hours, parts about, about $125 US for parts, if it is a dealer add $75 US

You probably never cleaned the cooling system out.
If you have not get it done by pros.
It seems something is blocking the flow. If the water pump went bad you will know. Rarely ever heard a impeller breaks off like you think. The bearings and the seal break first.
Check and see also if the heater valve is working.
As for the over heating even new thermostats fail. Reverse flush is needed or the procan measure the pressure in the radiator cooling system and edetermine if there is a engine pressure problem. Tools and experience is the key in the game of diagnosis.

All i can think of is the thermostat is not opening. or you may have a clog somewhere preventing the flow. Check the T-stat and hoses and radiator ( for clogs) Good luck

possible head gasket do a preasure test on the coolant system to see if it loses any coolant or presure drops and check for leaks hope this helps
