It sounds like you need to replace the (electric)ignition switch. When they go bad you will usually hear a crunch sound, they can be so bad as to overheat and cause other issues.
There's probably nothing wrong with the OEM key/barrel.
Try to turn the steering wheel gently from side to side while pulling on the key. Quite often the steering lock engages with the steering wheel shaft and it makes it difficult to get the key out while the shaft puts pressure on the lock.
Its a simple 5 or 6 pisition switch located on the steering coloum derrictly behind the key switch where you but the key into the lock cylinder and this needs to be removed to repace the ignition switch along with trim parts that cover the steering coloum . Idon't have a manual for your year but its alwas a bit tricky because they don't people to be able to pop the key switch out and steal your vehicle so there speical bolts that need to be drilled out or break off when tightened to a spisific torque . A nd its hard to test the switch unless its out of the vehicle well don't kill the mesinger i just told the truth
remove the steering coloum trim. Turn the key to run position, Press locking button on back of steering coloum housing assembly, Remove lock cylinder, Disconnect the ground strap from lock preload spring ( if equiped ) . Make sure key is still in run position when you reinstall.
If the key is non functional and you cannot turn to run then you will need the tool in this picture
you must get the key to the ACC position. if the steering lock is on, as you turn the key wiggle the steering wheel back and forth at the same time turn the key but keep pressure on it as if you are trying to pull it out, it takes practise to get it, with the ignition key in the ACC position, with the coloum trims removed you should find a small hole in the casting of the lock assm. if not it may be thinly blanked off, just pry the casting away if needed, if found insert a thin rod like the end of an antenna mast into the hole and it will pop out. once out try not to pull the key out or the keys in the barrel will shoot off in all directions
these have whats called a vats system. the little black pellet in your key is a resistor. there are 14 different values. you will need to buy a new lock cyinder and key.
it is better to buy a new ignition barrel.it takes a special socket to get the screws out, once the screws are out they do not need to be replaced.buy new barrel, disconnect negative battery cable, disconnect wires from barrel assembly, remove barrel from colum. first take vin# to dealership parts department to get correct barrel assembly, the keys with new assembly will fit doors and trunk
Remove steering column shroud(cover)and tap ignition barrel with small hammer while twisting key backwards and forwards, also turn steering wheel backwards and forwards sometimes this is enough to release key as the locking pins in barrel and the steering lock pin do sometimes jam.You will have to remove steering column shroud to replace ignition barrel if tapping/hitting it doesnt work anyway so its not a wasted effort.Good luck, let me know how it works out
Take the steering column cover off and tap/hit the ignition barrel with suitable tool (small hammer)while twisting on key.It may be enough to loosen it so key comes out.You will have to remove steering column cover to swap with replacment barrel anyway .Get someone to turn steering wheel while tapping/hitting barrel as it could be the steering column lock pin thats jamming.good luck.
