Just bought the car (65 mustang, 2 bbl 289ci) and in the 3 days of driving it has developed a surge when at idle. When throttle is advanced in rapid manor it almost dies. Not sure if there is a vacuum leak, it is certainly running rich...mixture screw or changing timing didn't seem to have an effect on how the eng idled(that confused me). Any ideas? Also, this car has pwr steering and AC. How do you turn the eng slowly to see/measure the gap in the points? I can't manually turn the motor over like I can on my 289 in my Cougar

Well congratulations on your Mustang!
First the surging. Check the carb for vacuum leaks. The original Motorcraft carbs have a stud for the air cleaner and it must be installed. Check all the screws. If the idle mixture screws have no effect it is time for a rebuild. I believe there is a vacuum leak at the manifold or carb. Check that the trans modulator is hooked up and that the pipe is not cracked.
To turn the engine over to adjust the points, take a screw driver and jump the solenoid. You can also use a remote starter switch jumping from the + terminal and the second far right post. If you have a dwell meter, you can continually crank and adjust the points as it cranks. Feeler gauge is .016 and dwell will be 30 degrees. Then set timing. Hope it helps;

Get a remote starter button at kragen and connect it to your battery and solenoid. try to hold your rpm to approx. 2000 rpm and at the same time choke the carb. with a rag just before the motor wants to die, pull the rag away fast, do not let the motor die!!! this will **** any debri from the carb. jets.remember to maintain 2000-2500 rpm while doing this...maybe more than once.g.l.
