Oil Leaking into the exhaust

I have a 2003 Volvo S40 1.9 Turbo. The car is smoking really bad and at the flex bend in the exhaust you can see where it is soaked inside with oil. I think the seals are bad in the turbo. any suggestions? Thank you!

Hi there, there are chemicals on the market that will soften up the seals but these take time to work i would suggest changing the turbo, you will also have to remove the oil from the exhaust system this can be done with other chemicals like an upper cylinder cleaner feed directly in to the air intake but only after the turbo has be fixed

My 2002 volvo s40 1.9 T smokes really bad its bluish in color, it seems to smoke more when at a stop. its burning oil...

Blue smoke is often the result of bad rings on the pistons. Engine rebuild time. It is possible that the turbo is leaking oil into your engine.

Oil line diagram

Hi Geoff, The symptoms you describe certainly point to the turbo. The turbo is basically an air compressor. It is operated by spinning a turbine with the hot exhaust gas which is joined to an impeller via a shaft. The shaft runs on a special floating bearing which is lubricated with pressurised engine oil. There are two special oil seals sealing that central shaft section from the impeller and turbine chambers. If either is leaking, oil will leak into the combustion chambers and result in excessive smoke. I do not know if repair kits are available where you reside, they are not available here and special seals are required. You may need to replace the unit with a reconditioned or a new replacement. 2001 Volvo s40 oil leaking in turbo, smokes white smoke and turbo not kicking in. I have a new head, timing belt waterpump, oxygen sens. valve job, cam pulley all changed. It is still smoking and no turbo....

Water in combustion chamber makes white smoke--suspect that the head gasket is leaking water into the chamber. If oil leaking around turbo, it may have a bad bearing and bad oil seal. Check waste gate valve and control.
