No 5th Gear / Overdrive Manual

When I shift into 5th gear I don't feel it lock in. It just revs. And if I hold in place it grinds. What could the problem be considering I've never heard of a anyone burning out a Fifth gear?

I have a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire. I can shift into all gears fine but when I shift into 5th gear it sorta grinds. In shifts into reverse fine its just the 5th gear. I don't whats wrong, or how to fix it....

About all you can do at this point is change the oil in the gear box and have your shift linkage checked and adjusted. The grind is internal, and the transmission will need to be removed to be repaired. Most likely it's worn synchronizers.

Starting to shift hard in to Rev and 5th gear grinds going into 5th and sometimes just will not go into Rev. 2004 mustang.

Sounds like you need a clutch and its possible you have a problem with the shift rail engaging.

1st, 3rd and 5th Gears all pop out of place + Whining noise

hi my name is nathan .......now...... what it sounds like is #1 (I have to hold it in place til I get to second gear) that can be that your shift linkage is worn or out of adjustment, pilot bushing is Badly worn, shift fork, lever and or shaft is bent or worn,or your bell housing is misaligned or just loose...i have a few more ideas on why it is jumping out but those are the main ones now about your whining gear noise#2( The whining sound starts low pitched in each gear then gets higher pitched as the rev's increase) you may have worn gears maybe or it could be just that your transmission lubricant is incorrect or inadequate.

5th. Gear

Sounds like you may have bent a shift fork or your cluster gear has some missing teeth on it now. I would venture to say that is it a bent shift fork. This will require the transmission be removed to gain access to inspect and repair.

5th gear doesn't lock

5th gear is gone, it'll be cheaper to find a good second hand one with a waranty than to get your one fixed sorry to say. The inside of gearboxes are only a place for gearbox specialists and they arent cheap unless you know someone.

Hi, Why on the newer 06-08 grand cherokee limited with the Hemi, Quadra Drive II, does it take until about 65 MPH for it to go into overdrive or 5th gear?

how high does it rev before it goes into 5th gear? if it's not too high, could just be a long gear, and completely normal, or otherwise you may have a bur on your shift valve causing it to not want to shift normally. for that case you have to pull the trans and grind the bur off, or if it's under warranty fight with the dealership until they agree to.
