While driving, Jeep transmission will slip into neutral, put shifter in neutral and turn ignition key and will go back into gear
The item that is electrically controlled and it turn controls the gear shifts is the TCM. transmission control module. They are prone to playing up and one of the reasons for that is moisture in the cable connections near the box. Have some one pull all the harness connections concerning the box apart and blowing them clean with air and ensure that they are dry and clean

First of all make sure you are checking the fluid right. Some people do not know that in order to check transmission fluid the engine needs to be running and the temperature needs to be sort of warm althought you should be able to get a good Idea just by the engine running. In this instance you might have a governer valve that isn't properly working to shift the engine when hydraulic pressure reaches a certain PSI. I would suggest having it flushed and put in new fluid and filter. If this doesn't work the problem is more serious and might need some professional assistance.

I had the same problem with my 94 jeep and i ended up finding out what was causing the problem was the starter relay in the fuse box under hood, i believe its the second or third relay. Try turning the key to the start position and leave it there and poop open ur hood and manuelly start the relay

As I said, trans fluid keeps the internal components "alive"... Low fluid level can cause burning of internal clutches, premature hardening of seals (essential to proper transmission of fluid pressure) as well as lubrication of necessary gear components such as planetary gear set (which can cause whine etc. which you now have) All of these components rely upon a constant flow of fluid for both cooling and lubrication. Depending upon how low and how long these parts had interrupted fluid flow, directly influences how much damage was done. I take no joy in telling you that you may have damaged your unit, I'd be far happier if I could give you a quick, inexpensive fix. But based upon what you have said, If I was working hands-on with this problem, I would make the recommendation I've already made. There are pressure tests etc that can be done at a transmission shop to verify to some degree of certainty what is going on within your unit. Hopefully they may find something other than what I've said. At this point though, it is wise to have it checked out by a professional, before you become stranded at a time when you can least afford to be.

I had the same problem, but in first gear. What I did to free it up, with the shifter out of the transmission, looking down into the hole you will see two linkages side by side with a slot in each. The trouble is the linkage got out of sink. What you do is put a large screw driver into (shifter lever) slot and try to move them (they are hard to move) to you find neutral.
SOURCE: transmission is stuck in reverse but the shifter
Check for wear in the gear lever selector/gate mechanism.
It may have allowed the lever to select reverse, the 'jump' the lockout gate back to neutral position for selection of forward gears.
You may be able to de-select reverse if you access the lever directly at the gearbox case.

Hi concertinthe, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
Is this a standard or automatic? When you turn the key are you starting the engine or just putting it in the run position ? Does the gearshift move while excelerating?
I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited automatic transmission. Turning the key to start the engine. Have not noticed gearshift moving. The transmission has started going into neutral while driving, I was pulling to side of road and cutting the Jeep off and it would reset and drive fine for a couple hundred miles and then repeat. Now, while driving and it goes into neutral, I put it in neutral switch it off and back on and then put it back into drive and it is good to continue driving. Is that not just crazy!! The check engine light comes on and the code is P1762 and P1763. I have had governor sensor replaced, solenoid replaced, throttle something replaced, PCM replaced, battery connectors, wiring harness to battery replaced, serviced transmission, fuel filter replaced. I have spent almost $3000.00 and it is still going into neutral while I am driving. I am a female and I drive out of state on my job and I really need to figure this out. I have carried it to Jeep Dealerships, transmission specialists and no one knows what to do. They say just drive it but I am afraid I am going to have or cause a really bad wreck on the interstate when it goes into neutral while I am driving. Please, has anyone else had this problem?? I would really appreciate some input on this. Thanks . Transmission specialist says it is an electrical problem.

I am new to this site. I have added this comment but don't see it when I log back in. So added it again. Sorry if you get more than one of the same message. Thanks for any input. I am desperate.
