I forgot to add the most crucial bit of info... this inability to stop only happens on snow covered roads.

  • Bill Boyd Dec 28, 2013

the abs is doing the job it is designed to do and that bis to give you directional steering by stopping the wheels from skidding. On snow/ice covered roads it is up to you to assists the brakes by using chains on the tyres or those special spiked tyres

  • jguild45 Dec 28, 2013

    Not allowed on Wisconsin roads

  • Bill Boyd Dec 28, 2013

it is obvious that there are tyres that will be allowed on the roads that will give traction on ice and snow so talk with a tyre dealer and be guided by their advice

Check brake pads for thickness and discs for condition (both sides). Have it taken to an accredited brake shop for a full evalution of why the system has failed.

Check for a cracked sensor wheel (reluctor). This was a problem on Rodeos using the 3-wheel ABS system. The sensor on the rear diff would detect the crack as a locked up axle and then constantly actuate ABS.

Hi.

If problem is only on startup and when idleing, then the problem is likely IAC system, also a vacuum leak will cause the same problem.

If problem is not only on startup and idle, but also when driving, then MAP sensor and EGR system must be checked.

Check also accelerator cable state and setting.

The first thing to do is pulling out the OBDII fault codes stored in the ECM. This is done connecting a code reader to the ECM diagnostic port. The job can be done for a small fee at any local garage, and it is done for free at AutoZone.

The codes will help locating the problem.

About possible faults:

Problem is stalling when idling and during startup, but engine idling fast all the time. Problem not starting at times it is due to the fact that the wrong mixture is being sprayed, this is probably causing flooding and misfire. Since the CEL is on, one of the codes returned is probably misfire.

Check accelerator.

Check IAC system. This is composed by a valve and a solenoid that check and control amount of extra air air when the engine is idling. The IAC valve is located on top of the throttle body.

Check the vacuum system and try cranking with gas tank cap off. Vacuum system is tested using an hand tool gauge onvacuum lines while spraying card cleaner on the hoses (or heating them with a torch). If there is a leak, pressure will go up. A big leak will also do hissing noise, and will often result in a lean code when doing an OBD code scanning.

This kind of symptoms can also be caused by weak wiring to MAP/MAF sensor (MAP in this engine).

If the car also drives very rough and is revving up and down in a weird way, check the EGR valve.

As first thing I would do a code scanning. This car is OBDII. The scan can be done for free at the nearest Autozone, or for a small fee at any garage.

If you get any OBDII code from the scan, report it here, so that we can individuate the possible reason for the problem.

If you repute my solution helpful, then please take some times to accept the solution. Providing good repair tips requires time and skills, and your feedback is important for us.

Regards.

Ginko.

I have a 1998 Isuzu rodeo v6 4wd. I can put in gear and drive then I hear clicking from back of vehicle and now while driving it pops out of 4H by itself and cause tranny to grind gears or whine horribly...

clicking sound is most likely failing "U" joints aggravated by the fact that it is in 4H of hard surface
That allows for torque wind up in the drive train and places the transmission under stress and any gear dog that is not in good condition will disengage causing it to jump out of gear
4 wheel drive is for use only on dirt , ice, grass or other slippery surface where the torque wind up can be relieved by slipping or loosing traction of the tyres
Remember it is a 4 wheel drive and not an All wheel drive vehicle and the difference is a third diff operation in the transfer case

Isuzu rodeo 2000 ls 2wd found one vehicle speed sensor where is the second?

I think you may be referring to the ABS wheel speed sensor. There should be one on each wheel hub ... quite often opposite side to the brake caliper. You should see a wire going to it.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park

This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

The ABS light in my 2004 Isuzu Rodeo (3.5) has been on for an extended period of time. My car cuts off randomly when the brakes are applied. Suggestions?

Your ABS sensor/s... you have to check them all...Sometimes the sensor outer wire gets worn,an the wires are exposed on the inside, now if this has happened...the wires will short out, when they touch the metal frame of the vehicle, which will cause the vehicle to cut off... However also make sure you dont have any vacuum leaks from your brake booster... A big loss in vacuum will also have the vehicle to loss power....Gooduck...

Brake slippage

It sounds like a wheel sensor is failing, this will trip the ABS and cause the brakes to feel a bit weird. You will need to press the brake harder to stop if the ABS getts tripped.

Rear ABS Light/Rear brakes drag sometimes

The only moving parts on brake's are caliper's and master cylinder. The rest are just pipe's. Dosent sound like the master cylinder as the two back brakes should lock not one. It still sounds like caliper's. Can you be sure they have changed them If it were mine I would get someone independent to check they have done the work they say they done.

Abs releases brakes on dry pavement while coming to a stop

Just as it says...When I come to a stop, the abs releases the brakes, usually only momentary but occasionally I have to shut off the ignition to stop the vehicle. When this happens the ABS active light does come on and there are no DTCs, I do believe I found the problem tho, the right rear exciter ring is ground up due to wheel bearing failure and a lot of metal has 'grabed' on to the sensor itself.
