Diagrams I have show a twin cam set up with 2 balancing shafts. The marks on the cam shaft point to (left cam shaft 11 oclock the mark on the right point to the 1 oclock position. The chain will have 3 black links-- the top black links will be at the timing marks on the shafts with the 3rd black link directly at 6 oclock facing a mark on the gear. The balancer marks both point to the 1 oclock position with black links on each and the 3rd black link will be facing a mark to the 7 oclock position on the crankahaft gear. Everything is done with the piston at TDC no 1 cylinder so get it there before you put the cam shafts in position or you will bend valves. Crank shaft gear is not keyed to the crank shaft. there are dots on the right hand balancer shaft gears and these dots will be as the 2 dots on adjacent teeth either side of a dot on the meshing gear. I suppose that is all as clear as mud but if you got this far then you will see the marks and marked links on the chains

SOURCE: audi a4 camb timming

Hi,

Audis are not very common in mycountry but from what I can gather:

Themark for the crankshaft gear is on the cover you have to remove inorder to get at the timing belt. The sprocket you may be having troublewith is the intermediate shaft (in front of the water pump) and I don'tbelieve that one matters at all since it doesn't drive any of the cams. The intake cams are driven by a chain off of the exhaust cam shaft soonly the exhaust cam is driven directly by the timing belt.

Additionally, you may benefit from the Audi A4 Service Manual and/or Audi A4 Cabriolet Workshop Manual.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I trying to Fix the timing chain need a layout of the timing chain marker.

Get a Chilton's or Haynes manual for your make year and model. Timing chain/belt set up is a standard subject that always includes photos of set up marks either on the block or head(s). Should be able to find one online, ebay or amazon.

Audi a4 1.8 can't start after top was overhauled is making a weird sound like backfiring the engine dont even move please help camshaft marks was done as well as pulleys and the pistons was also put on...

Back fire is only caused by intake valve being open when a spark plug fires on a cold engine.
Recheck timing marks of cams where the drive sprocket notch of each cam shaft aligns with the cam cap mark at the rear of the head.

It has been known for the crank sprocket to come loose on the crank nose and timing will be off if this is so.

Hi there... im currently working on a audi 2002 audi a4 2.4 v6. and would like to know if you can please tell me where the timing marks are and in what position the left side and right side cams must be...

chances are the valves are bent,as for timing marks then its not difficult TDC no1 and valves for no1 closed with inlet about toi open ,easy then in that position look for the timing marks ,basic motor mechanics ,timing a engine with no marks at all ,pt 2 city and guilds motor mechanics exam.
