Bad smell from heating system

Terrible odor in 1994 Eagle Vision. Wandering if the fresh air vent has a drain in it because the odor is coming from the heating system when blower is turned on. Worse in the summer, could it be plugged & emitting this rotten smell?

I would guess so because there should not be an odor coming from your vents and if it is worse when the heat is on there's a chance something literally crawled up there and died! I always wanted to say that not referring to peoples butts. lol But all kidding aside. You would be surprised at the little critters that can find there way into your venting system. Or just organic material that has gotten in there somehow and decayed. Best of luck tracking down those oderiferous emanations.

SOURCE: changed the 2 cabin air filters but bad odor still comes out vent

If you run your Air cond on recirculate always try using an air sanitizer in your return vent. Or switch your A/C to outside air flow for for half an hour and raise the rear of your sunroof panel to vent the stale air do this till the smell dissipates and then close he sunroof and reset the A/C to recirculate if desired.

Sounds like you need to do a A/C deodorizing kit. May be able to find one at your local parts store. Or, run your A/C without your recirc, and hope the mildew gets off the EVAP core. It is possible you have a dead mouse in your heater box if it smells really bad.

SOURCE: I HAVE A BAD SMELL COMING FROM AIR CONDITIONING

Some models do have a cabin air filter......check your owners manual for that.
Do you have mice in your area?
You may have one in the heater/AC system.

But first....go to an auto parts store and look for the product to clean and deodorize the A/C vent system.
Follow the instructions and if that does it.........Great!

Otherwise you may have to have some of the venting taken apart and checked for something that has entered........uninvited.
Have them pull the fan motor first.....thats a common problem area.

SOURCE: My Audi has a bad smell when I turn on the air

could be an a/c leak, could be mold in the vents.....there are vent cleaning kits you can get at most auto parts stores....they consist of a spray that kills mold, however you do not want to use them if you dont know how to take the ductwork out of the dash as it may leak and destroy electrical components in the dash.

Why does my ac in my car smell like gas?

Two potential failures come to mind for this issue; a dirty cabin filter or a fuel system leak. Cabin filters catch debris that is suspended in the air before it comes out of the vents. These contaminants build up on the surface of the filter and can produce a foul odor and reduce airflow. If this is the case, the cabin filter simply needs to be replaced in order to resolve the problem. A fuel system leak is another possibility but is a much more serious issue. Fuel that escapes the system will evaporate into the air which can then be drawn into the A/C system via the fresh air intake (located beneath the cowl area, close the the windshield wipers). Although this would cause a foul odor in the cabin, the bigger problem is that flammable liquid is close to a heat source (exhaust) under the hood which is a recipe for disaster. Because this is a potential safety issue, I'd recommend having a trained mechanic inspect for a fuel leak and repair as necessary. Burning plastic smell when cold out run heater and fan inside car and out

Are you loosing radiator fluid. sometimes the heater core will rupture and you will smell burn odor. also check for strange rubbing sounds or screeching coming from the blower fan motor. or engine exhaust manifolds are hot when car is on, make sure nothing is leaning on them which will cause a burn odor. Any odor coming from outside will find it's way inside through the fresh air vents.

2008 impala, terrible nauseating odor from heater

sounds like a mouse nest in hvac system, no smell because when using ac it doesn't use outside air, probably a nest on the screen at the hvac air intake or if you have a a cabin air filter check in there. many times rodents make nests have babies and then the car moves and they cannot feed the babies and so they die and rot smell comes into car. usually it is not hard to access because there should be a screen between the outside and inside under the cowl cover, if no screen and the little buggers vot into your hvac duct system this could be a much bigger problem entailing removal of dash completely. most likely this isn't the case, good luck

Defrost will not defrost my windshield

You do not mention the type of car you have. If you have air that blows out the defroster and panel vents you should have defrost. Do you smell a sweet odor coming from the car? This could be antifreeze leaking though the heater core. This will cause your windshield to remain foggy.

Fishy, steam odor coming from AC vents

Forget the radiator tank. Your AC 'Condensate drain' hose is plugged up. This is a common problem. If you know where the hose comes out under the car you can ( carefully ) push a wire up it. If you're lucky it's plugged near the end by a mud-dauber wasp. If not, take it to your dealer and see if you can persuade the write-up guy to show you where the drain outlet is as a gesture of good faith. If they insist on charging you money, consider that when you buy your next car...
