How do i replace ECU/ECM on 1996 toyota celica?

I have a fuel problem that is related to the ECU. I have found a used replacement ECU from the same model (a manual 2.2L 5FSE engine) and wondering can I just replace the old one or would it need to reprogrammed by Toyota. Toyota are not being helpful.. thanks!

If it is just the fuel problem with the ecu, replace the chip in side the ecu from the new one you got as then you dont need to re program it then. the fuel chip and control is inside the ecu. you used to be able to get the chips for them and program the codes onto them. should be clip in type chips. if its soldered type as there are 2 types of ecu boards with same part number. you will need to un solder the chip.

Where is the fuel pump relay located on a 1996 toyota celica

If you are DIY, you will need a Repair manual if not now, later anyway. Most auto parts stores carry, your library may. or
try filepeep.com or manualslib.com
It is likely under the dash, near the Ecu.

I recently had the ck engine light come on my 05 toyota corolla CE...ran the scanner on it to pull up the p0741 code. I took it to dealership and thought might be related to ECM issue , they replaced it...

Yeah Toyota is aware of this situation.Production changes have occurred to correct this condition.
You did the right thing to take it to the the dealership because when they pulled the code p0741 they had to apply the Toyota Technical Service bulletin TC008-04" to your vehicle.
They had to perform several tests and since you said they replaced the ECU for free it was because your vehicle was lower then 5 years old and less then 60,000 miles. This TBS is covered by the powertrain Warranty. They had to replaced the ECU with an updated unit, and that particular warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles. Your car should be back on the road running like a champion and you should NOT have the same code again.

My 00 celica won't start. The battery went completely dead because I had the radio left on overnight. Now it will turn over but won't start. I have been told by a mechanic that the ECU is blown in it, so...

doubt if it is the ECU
check the ecu fuse in the engine bay cluster
and the starter relay are ok

check for spark at the plugs
and fuel pump is working
the fuel pump has a relay

ECUs dont go bad due to flat battery
if you jump started the toyota without putting the jumping earth lead to your toyota motor direct as an earth ecus may blow the fuse

difficult one this anfd i do hope more experts read it and have a think about it ,now engine will run with ether spray ,or petrol down air intake so the problem has to be fuel related ,so firstly check for fuel pressure into the fuel rail ,on the end is a car tyre like valve so push this down and check the pressure to see if it squirts ,if it has pressure then use a meter to check the current to the injectors but as its a pulse then use a dwell meter or a scope as i think the ECU could be damaged and its not pulsing the injectors to make them open allowing fuel through ,but i could be wrong of course ,it may pay to have the ECU repaired in specialist company to eliminate this as a source of your problem .

84 toyota supra 5 speed man.

sounds like ecm. car starts but when it switches over to run setting from cranking setting the cumputer ecu doent activate the run curcuits which may control your fuel injectors. check to see if engine has spark. remove one plug wire from spark plug put it close to the valve cover if you see an arc then you know that you have spark. then also go to fuel pump in tank and check voltage on the power wire if you have good voltage and the pump doesnt make any noise while ur cranking then it may be a fuel pump if the pump is making way to much noise then check the fuel pressure by hooking up a fuel pressure gauge. all test are to be done while someone cranks the engine. noid light for the injectors, disconnect on injector electical connetor connect the noid light to the wire that u just unplugged from the injector. the light will flash while u crank , once it goes to the run circut the light will either stay on which will shut off ur car or the light will stay off which will do the same. if the noid light did what I said when it went to the run circut then it is what controls your injectors...ecm good luck....daniel

the ecm doesn't control the pump relay. it is energized by turning the key and supplying positive voltage.
