2004 automatic vw beetle shuts down when gas is low. gas gauge is not on empty but car still shuts down, about 30 seconds later it always starts up. also sometimes going up an incline on hwy the car will automatically kick down to lower gear and will not accelerate when I give it more gas. this will last for about 30 seconds but then it will suddenly run normal again. truly stumped???

I'm dealing with the same car. I just had the transmission completely overhauled. Very$$$. The mechanic told me that it's common for cabrio's to develop this problem between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, mine happened around 95,000 miles. Knowing what I know now, I would have sold it.

Try using the all windows up and down button (Drivers side on door), evidently after you change your battery this is the reset proceedure.

run a scan tool on it and make sure there are no codes, if there is codes address those problems first, if no codes.. next time it won't start check for fuel preasure. it is probably a fuel pump getting ready to go out or they may be a large amount of something other than gas clogging the pick-up sock at bottom of fuel pump.

P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected
The 4mm inside diameter vaccuum hose gets pinched between the lower intake manifold and the secondary air pump housing, flattening it over time.
Here's a link to the steps to fix yourself if you are mechanically inclined...

P1128 Long Term Fuel Trim Is Too Lean
It is very likely this code is coming up because of the vacuum hose as well.
