SOURCE: transmission won't shift to 2nd and 3rd gears goes from 1st to 4th.

Doesn't sound like a simple fix. I would suggest having it serviced.

SOURCE: transfer case oil change- 1999 Land Rover Discovery II

No need for a diagram, to drain the oil, there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transfer box, under the handbrake drum. To fill, the fill plug is about in line with the centre of the handbrake drum and to the left. I think both plugs are 1/2" square. Fill to overflow with Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R. Takes about 2L or so.

the other issue is electrics windows and door looms are problematic

1999 series 2 discovery TD5 auto.

Its not a tractor and i wouldnt tow with a automatic anyway as i think its dangerous as no engine braking but? now without a drive i honestly couldnt give you a concrete answer but i do suspect a worn pinion on one of the diffs or maybe something worn in the transfer box which is more than money than this vehicle is worth no doubt so put some STP additive in the diff and transfer box ,use the one for the engine oil as this will help or pump some LM grease into each unit ,or buy a new vehicle which is no doubt cheaper as if this is a big petrol engine then its a worthless old vehicle a diesel will hold its price though even more so in europe

I have a discovery 2 TD5 automatic and I want to change the engine for a faster more economical diesel motor. What do you recommend. I often tow an off road trailer and have a roof rack with a roof top ten...

I wouldnt recomend it for 2 reasons,
first, changing from gas to diesel or diesel to gas is a very difficult because of ecm,s and wireing harnesses.
second, the land rover has one of the best tow drive packages there is, hard to improve on,
If you need more power and economy perhaps an upgrade to a larger tow vehicle

I have a 2001 land rover discovery II and I need the torque settings so I can put the engine back togather. Im not sure how tight to tighten the head cylinder bolts or the manifold bolts.

Do not reuse the old head bolts. These are torque-to-yeild type bolts and stretch when torqued down.

Starting in the center and working your way outward:

1st step - 15 ft-lbs

2nd step - 90 degrees

3rd step - 90 degrees

2002 TD5 is sluggish in all gears espeacially 1st gear, it is an auto 2.5

Could be MAFS out of range - check & replace if needed.

Or maybe the EGR valve is stuck open, sometimes you can clean them out but most of the time a new one is required.

Both common on the TD5
