F-250 Belt Removal

  1. Install a 16-mm (5/8-inch) closed end wrench for 7.5L engines or a 15-mm (19/32-inch) closed end wrench for 5.8L and 7.3L engines on the tensioner pulley bolt and lift the tensioner arm away from the belt.
  1. Remove belt. Release tensioner arm slowly. Do not allow arm to snap back after the belt is removed because this may damage the tensioner.

SOURCE: 318 timing chain setting m42 engine with out bmw tools

Remove the cam cover, remove the spark plugs, turn the engine to number 1 TDC, put a pencil in spark plug hole number one and twist the crank back and forth and make doubly sure you are at TDC. Now loosen the four bolts at the front of each cam sprocket, check TDC again with the pencil and rocking the crank, now take the pencil and lay it across the flats at the back of each cam. Twist the cams very carefully so that the pencil sits flat on each cam square. Snug up the sprocket bolts and use the pencil to check TDC again! Now check the cams again. Repeat the procedure until you have the cams flat and the engine at TDC.

I have a 1990 mk2 golf turbo diesel injection1.6,i am in the process of replacing the head gasket

why not read the service manual and not guess.
so you are timing the cam
ours has 2.0L and 2.8L not 1.6L
so what country is this? the books are by country first, then year,
and model and year.
the timing belt (cog belt)
some engines time at TDC #1 firing,
other cars do #4 (with odd cam bias forces)
what this car does IDK but there are SOHC , And DOHC, and 8v and 16valve heads, and the 2 kinds, are not the same
you said magic word cam locks so is the DOHC dual cam head. sure
but our 16v is chain drive. so...
so I have no data on it. 1.6L

google finds this.

https://pmmonline.co.uk/technical/timing-belt-replacement-volkswagen-golf-1-6l-16v/

so is TDC #1 firing (compression) not exhaust stroke TDC.
the settings.

lacking relic manual 32 years old and ago.
all you can do is google it or buy one used on ebay
or google endlessly or like above 1 seconds work.

I do not know if this engine is interference type, and is first thing to learn before tool box open !
google finds

16 valve diesel Interference!

How do you set cam timing and crank timing with out a timing tool on a bmw e36 318i m42engine?and also what does tdc mean?

On any engine you should find timing marks on the end of camshaft which line up with Mark on the crankshaft. TDC is top dead center which is when the first most piston is on it's compression stroke. When you move the crank to TDC the firstmost or number one piston will be on the compression stroke. Turning the camshaft to align with the timing mark on crankshaft will put the engine in proper valve timing.

How exactly should the intake cam be set and the exhaust cam be set on a ford 2.0 dohc with VCT.

There is a Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool that is made to hold the cams and another one to find TDC on the crank.

Bmw 318ti 1997 starting problem

6hi this sounds like it could be a fuel system fault, or you are getting air into the system, try checking the MAF sensor to see if that is ok, have you an engine light on? try checking the ECU for any error codes that are still in the system thats a start for you...anything else just post on this again cheers

Set timing after rebuild

make sure #1 is top dead center(TDC) or all the way up in the bore. Set the lower chain, use the marks dot to dot. then the cams, the intake cam has it's own mark as well as the exaust cam the marks on the cam should be strait up and down to the reflecting cam. put the chains on. Spin the engine over by hand to make sure you are right.

Need to know how to set the timing

Cylinder #1 set at TDC, compression stroke. Cam marks level with head, aligned with mark on cover, or if unclear where to mark the cam: SET Cam at point where intake valve has just closed and both valves are shut on cyl. #1, cam gear marks should start to appear more clearly to technician, along with corresponding alignment points. This is ballpark. Remember, on clockwise rotation, after cylinder #1 intake valve(s) are shut, the cam will continue to rotate 90 degrees and come to rest at a position in which both exhaust and intake valves are at their maximum lash point. (the most play) Hopefully if you get this close, you will decipher the marks that exist on your Bavarian machine.
