My 1991 manual transmission toyota camry won't disengage completely. Same thing happened about a month ago one day and then seemed OK for about 500 miles or so and now is doing the same thing only this time it won't stop. If I start it with the clutch pedal to the floor, it tries to move slightly meaning the clutch is not disingaging fully. I replaced the clutch master cylinder about a year ago but have not seen whether slave or linkage is operating normal or not (have no help to watch or push in pedal). Reservoir is full. Thought I felt a subtle, almost inperceptable "thump" sensation when I pushed in the pedal both times it happened. I know the clutch ligning is OK because after it happened the first time I put it under load and it pulled good starting out in the first, second, and third gears of five in transmission. Dirt in linkage? Master or slave push rod problem? Or something more serious like pressure plate or throwout bearing intermittant problem? I'm just thinking through the problem right now. Will get a friend to come by hopefully this weekend to do some driveway testing...

Yes, thanks. I would buy the new one as I did with the master. One thing I omitted in original inquiry. When I replaced the master clutch cylinder, I think I left off a spring which I could not see any need for. It seemed to return OK and give correct free play etc. so I left it off. I was upside down on my head cursing the engineering that put it in such an impossible place where my hand barely could fit working almost blind as you must know. If it is essential, I would replace as the second time around would be a piece of cake....I assume.

Definetly your slave cylinder. Seen it several times on toyotas in my career. I do suggest buying a new slave cylinder rather than trying a rebuild kit. I've had customers that requested a simple rebuild kit in the past, and had them fail within a few months. I know my guys, and I personally rebuilt them correctly, but they still failed. I've never had a customer return with a complaint on a new one. The repair itself is very simple, and if you buy a new one, you should be fine for a good long time.

I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck on your repair.

Clutch pressure plate might be coming apart but be sure to check the clutch pedal pivot and mounts. I've seen firewalls break and cause this problem.

I have a 1991 Toyota Camry DX a while back it wouldn't engage when shifted into drive right away, next day and since then it will not engage when I shift into drive but reverse works fine, any ideas?

If automatic check fluid levels as required by Owner's manual. no manual, try filepeep.com or manualslib.com
Fluid is ok? you probably need professional inspection hopefully early enough to save the transmission.

yes your car will be over heat, just go to junk yard and open thermorstar sensor of another car to replace the old one that is cheap than you buy a new one ok!

1991 Toyota Camry, tail lights and dash lights don't work

Have you looked under the hood? There are more fuses under the hood. Is your dimmer turned down on your dash lights?

1991 toyota camry automatic. Transmission is fine

sounds like you may not even have a 4th gear. worst thing is you may need a new transmission. try putting in some "Lucas Transmission Fix" it's like $12 at Autozone.. If that doesn't help, take it to a transmission shop and have them check inside your transmission to see if you need a new transmission or if it's something that could be fixed. It may even be a sensor.

Whats going on

most likely the problem is you have blowby. the oil is coming up past your worn piston oil rings which is causing oil everywheres. start your car and remove the oil dipstick and see if oil comes out. if not you need a engine rebuild or new used motor which would be cheaper in the long run.
