4x4 transimission clunks when engaged?

I just started having a problem with the transmission of a jeep cherokee sport, 4.0 4 wheel drive - when engaging the 4 wheel drive, it clunks at first, seems like its not engaging, then, once i am moving forward/reverse it engages fully and as soon as I slow down again, it begins to clunk. It feels like its not engaging fully?

  • joej33 May 15, 2009

I do use the 4H - N - 4L lever and that is when it clunks several times, as I give it gas, before fully engaging and then as soon as I slow down again it will start to clunk until I come to a full stop. I have been engaging the 4x4 while the transmission is in nuetral and dis-engaging again while in nuetral. in the past, i've engaged it will the transmission is engaged and only have recently tried engaging while in nuetral as it was feeling kind of funny. I think I will try it with transmission engaged (in drive) and I only use 4x4 on dirt roads. I'll get back to you on monday and let you guys know how things worked switching from 4x2 to 4x4. thanks!!!

When engaging the 4WD system, you are pulling the lever on the Transfer Case right? Not the transmission, it's a different gearbox.
There were several versions of transfer cases that used both full and part-time 4 wheel drive.
From your description this sounds like a part-time transfer case.
Going with that, it is somewhat normal to hear and feel a mild clunk when engaging 4WD high range, especially if you are at a complete stand-still or under full throttle.
Try engaging 4WD High while slowly rolling at idle - no throttle. It should pull in fairly smoothly.
Once 4WD is engaged it will literally LOCK the front and rear axles together. So do not do it on hard dry pavement.
These older style 4WD systems need a little "give" especially when turning. The engineers assume you are not engaging 4WD unless you are in a somewhat slippery scenario.
Many CV joints, axles, U-Joints, differentials, and transfer cases are damaged and broken by folks who don't understand this.
Reading the owners manual should provide a clearer description of what you've got.
Bear in mind that when you come out of 4WD it may not completely release, again due to hard pavement binding up the axles. You can try this: backing up 10-25 feet in a straight line, or getting one set of wheels on the shoulder or in some gravel. That should allow it to release the transfer case and go back to everyday 2WD high.
I hope this helps.

4 wheel drive

use part time on wet or slippery road surfaces. Use full time in snow.
Though some will shift into different modes at a standstill, I generally do so when rolling at 5-20mph...it makes engagement easier on the transfer case. when driving on dry road surfaces, why use 4x4? it uses more fuel and really has little benefit. differences in front/rear wheel speed must be absorbed by transfer case alone, while on slippery surfaces, a bit of tire slippage reduces stress on unit.

How do I activate the 4 wheel drive for snow highway driving?

They didn't make Grand Cherokees in '86, so I assume you mean '96?

I'm also assuming it is indeed a 4x4 and not a two wheel drive...sorry, I have to ask!

All the V8's GC's were Quadra-Trac. Please confirm this with what is label on your shifter. If so, it should say "4Hi, N, and 4Lo".

The Quadra Trac system has a viscous coupling. Meaning, that when the rear wheels start to slip, it heats the coupling up, and engages the front wheels.

This system typically put about 95% of the power to the rear wheels, and only about 5% goes to the front during normal driving, so it's essentially in 2wd mode.

When you put the transmission shifter into neutral, and pull your transfer case down to 4lo, then you have all four wheels locked. Do not drive like this on dry pavement.

To answer your questions, the 4x4 should automatically engage when the rear wheels start to slip. It is a seamless transition and you really won't be able to tell.

If you're in real bad snow, then pull it down to 4lo. That'll lock all four wheels in and give you greatest traction.

Drive safe.

Transmission slips starting in 4X4

4x4 low is just alow ratio gear in transfer case just for when you need that extra boost when your stuck or pulling something up a hill or thru mudd, something on that order. you can run the transmission in any gear you want, but drive is the prefered gear. in other words when your in 4x4 low lieve it in drive. happy 4 wheeling. OLD SCHOOL.
