Note, totally wrong answer above. wow 2 times wrong, there is no OD sensor. (over drive is 4 gear active)
so easy, and is covered in the operators guide.!
(it says trans errors, get it serviced) end .
now the truth from a real owner of car. not bs.
car has 4 speed A/T and this 4 speed is 100% electronically shifted by the TCM brain, and when not happy it flashes OD.
what you do is (USA answers only) connect a s scan tool
and see those (P07xx) tranny errors first.

TCM = transmission control module, and this module was moved
into the confines of the ECU , and the ECU became PCM on that day. (integrated and unified) this 97 now for the first time ever
report trans codes using the 16pin female , obd2 jack about right, knee. and all scan tools in use work there, all.
even very old ones. even $5 fleabay scan tools. fact.

here is the list of early and 96 cars.

and more

and the operators guide.

Interior light and doors open light flashes on and off whilst driving

id give a good look at all the doors (jams) at the switches that control lights , especially the back door ones , on my Camry my young son very often hit with his foot when getting in/out and broke off the switch in the back door (I think it sticks out a bit too far) , if you find one broken or "not looking right " there easy to replace . only one Phillips screw and out they come , unhook plug with wires and connect new one back it goes in same hole ,same way and screw goes back in

sounds like a "bad sensor", goe to advance ,auto zone, kelly, and have them do a "free" code test", and see if it is a code error, if it is, you or someone might have Changed the Battery lately, if so disconnect battery for atleast half an hour, if this does not fix light, try draining trannsmission and replace filter, and fluid, this should correct any {mech} problems, let me know, god bless

Maintenance light flashing

h) Engine Oil Replacement Reminder
Light (for vehicles sold in U.S.A.)
This light reminds you when to replace
the engine oil.
This light will come on when the ignition
key is turned to “ON” and will go off after
about a few seconds.
When you drive for about 8000 km (5000
miles) after the engine oil replacement,
this light illuminates for about 3 seconds
and then flashes for about 12 seconds
with the ignition key turned to “ON” position.
If you continue driving without the
engine oil replacement, and if the driving
range exceeds 12000 km (7500 miles), the
light will come on after the ignition key is
turned to “ON” position. The light will remain
on thereafter.
If the light is flashing, we recommend that
you replace the engine oil at an early
opportunity depending on the driving and
road condition. If the light comes on, replace
it as soon as possible.
You need to reset the light after the engine
oil replacement. Reset the light by
following the procedure below:
1. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position
with the odometer reading shown.
(For details, see “Odometer and two
trip meters” on page 136 in this Section.)
2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position
while holding down the trip meter
reset button.
Hold down the button until the light goes
off. Before the light goes off, it illuminates
for 3 seconds, flashes for 2 seconds and
illuminates for 1 second.
If the system fails to reset, the light will
remain flashing.

Engine light is flashing on, and is running rough!

WHEN THE LIGHT IS FLASHING IT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE A MISFIRE. I SUGGEST YOU REPLACE PLUGS AND WIRES. BECAREFUL DRIVING BECAUSE ALTHOUGH UNLIKLY, IT COULD BE MORE SERIOUS AND CAUSE A FIRE
