Odometer reads 'ERROR' and Speedometer pegs at 90 mph

1993 Aerostar extended, 4L. Just replaced leaking heater core and in process the connector for the light near passenger feet / glove compartment shorted to frame (arc & spark). I have replaced blown 15A fuse. All instruments, etc. work fine except Odometer displays 'ERROR' and speedometer pegs at 90 mph while barely moving.

SOURCE: Instrument cluster failure causes fuse #29 to blow.

ok it could be quite simple
lets look at wrong size fuse
example 15 and you need a 25 fuse
also if you did any work on vehicle its quite possible that you grounded something out wrong retrace your work and fix accordingly
bad cluster relay is another problem that would cause these problems

SOURCE: Instrument panel dials all pegged to zero or max

ok let me help you get started
this isnt going to be easy we need to do a bunch of testing.
you will need a 12 volt test light.
remove the negitive battery cable and connect one side of your test light to the battery negitive and the other side to the battery cable . and with the key off.. so now if you have a short some where the light should be lit. now what we have to do is start to pull fuses untill the light goes out. and when you find the fuse that is causing your short and drain your battery . then we have to look into the section of the wiring and components.
let me know what you find
later paul

SOURCE: 1993 Ford Aerostar - Replacing heater core

Inside on the passenger side under the dash you will find a large black box. It has several screws holding the cover on. You remove the core from there. It helps to take the jockey box out first. But, the hoses to the core are outside under the hood on the passenger side. These usually have C-hook clamps on them. That means you need a special tool to get the clamps off, then the hoses slide off the rubber gromet on the core from the outside, by simply pulling on them. You can find the two hoses on the far left when you are outside on the front of the vehicle. They project from a small are on the side of the heater fan housing. Remember to save the clamps, most new cores do not come with.

SOURCE: tail light wiring connectors and wiring diagram

A test light checking each connector would be faster and easier to do. Maybe somebody may have a illustration for you but by far a simple test light is all you need with a helper turning on the different lights as you check them out and writing all your findings down

Leaking anti freeze

If you are not seeing any coolent of the floor when parked, the chances are that you may have an internal engine leak, such as leaking thru headgasket and coming out as steam. Take your van to PepBoys for pressure testing for which they carge about $40.

1997 Geo Metro speedometer and odometer do not work

Let me guess, it goes up to about 30, stays there, and if you go faster (past what would be the halfway point of your speedometer) it starts dropping below 30. It sounds like the type of speedometer that uses two magnetic cores at 90 degrees to each other, and one has gone out.

Troubleshooting and repair should be similar to this: http://www.fieros.de/en/articles/speedo.html

Replace heater core

Warning: Allow the engine to completely cool before beginning.
Using a thick cloth, turn the radiator cap slowly to the first stop.
Step back and let the pressure release.
Once the pressure has been released, tighten the radiator cap.
Disconnect the heater hoses at the engine compartment firewall and plug the ends to prevent further draining out of the system.
In the passenger compartment, remove the 6 screws attaching the heater core access cover to the plenum assembly. Remove the access cover.
Depress the retainer bracket at the top of the heater core. Pull the heater coer rearward and down, removing it from the plenum assembly.
Position the new heater core and seal in the plenum assembly.
Install the heater core access cover to the plenum assembly.
Install the heater hoses.
Check the coolant level and add coolant as required.
Check the system for proper operation and for leaks.......I hope this helps, Adios
