Car is a 2003 Impala. Mechanic did diagnostic and says catalytic converter is stopped up. ABS light comes on most times car is driven. It will not accelerate properly on inclines. Doesn't want to shift gears unless road surface is completely flat. Additionally, car will overheat if driven in city during warm days. I'm thinking there are multiple problems w/car! What would be most urgent to fix? Are any of these problems my son and I could tackle? We are very "shade tree"!
Did the mechanic replace the catalytic converter? If not you can order one from Catalytic converter warehouse online it's much cheaper than having someone fix it. (With the cat problem it will cause the car' acceleration and cooling problem.) Acceleration if the cat was not changed it will have affect on accelerating. Is the check engine light on? If so you need to get the codes out go to Auto Zone they will scan it for free. ABS there's 4 sensors, one at the backside of each tire. One of them is bad and needs replaced. Transmission problem has the car ever had the trans fluid and filter changed changed? If not do so. Cooling problem sounds like the water pump. How many miles on the car? And yes you can fix it yourself which could save you alot of $$$$$$$ money.
IT IS HARD TOO SAY WHAY AAL IS WRONG.THE ABS LIGHT DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE CONVERTER.BUT A PLUGGED CONVERTER WILL CAUUSE LOW ENGINE VACUUM WITCH WILL CAUSE OTHER SENSOR NOT TO WORK CORRECTLY AND TO RUN HOT.THE CONVERTER IS VERY IMPORTANT AND WILL FIX SOME OF YOUR OTHER PROBLEMS.
