What last thing you did before that state happened. I can advice you if you remembered
Based on your description is sounds like a slipping fan belt. This could be caused by a loose or worn belt, or an accessory driven by the belt going bad and putting an excess load on the belt.
The slipping belt will develope heat. You could start the car when it is cold. Create the condition that causes the noise, like running the engine at an elevated speed for a minute or two. Shut off the engine and feel the pulleys to see which one is hotter than the rest. This could also be done using a infrared thermometer.
Could be lots of things but it could be a bad motor mount.
Have someone observe the engine when you first start the car and accelerate (with foot on brake and them off to the side) while in drive to see if motor is moving off of the motor mount causing unnecessary noises.
Could also be a worn pulley or bad water pump. If this is happening at idle you can listen to try to determine where the noise is coming from.

SOURCE: 2006 Chrysler T&C van power steering fluid is full but sounds low
Make sure u check the level with the car running. If the fluid level is still good and still have a steering wine. you have a fluid restriction. This would involve replacing the power steering resivior. The filter screen gets clogged and causes a restriction hope this helps.

remove the serpentine belt, then start the engine and listen for the noise. if the noise is gone. then you have a accessory going bad. ( i.e. ac compressor, water pump, belt tensioner, idler pulley...etc..)
SOURCE: 2004 Chrysler Crossfire 25,000 mls auto, road hum noise
MOST of the hums after a while come from the diff as the back axle does the driving and almost all its life runs the same way except when going in reverse ,is the rear diff meshing and worn on both the crownwheel and the pinion and the humming gets slightly louder the faster you go and almost goes when almost stopped and this can also be the slight vibration you get so get the diff oil drained and refilled and check if there is any metal in the oil when drained if so thats your problem But it will last for years like that..Let me know how you get on RON
