Removal of Rear Brake Drum on 2004 Chevy Aveo

How do you remove the rear barke drum on a 2004 Chevy Aveo. It looks a though you have to remove a large nut that holds the drum and breaing on the shaft. It this all you have to remove to get the drum off? Does the snap ring have to be removed under the nut to get the drum off? Is there anyway to adjust the brakes with the drum on to make the removal easier? My brakes are wore into my drums making removal difficult. I assume once I get the drum off the rest will be fairly easy to figure out. If you know if any other tricks or things to avoid on rear barkes for this car, I would apprecaite any guidence.

The First 6 or so months of production the drums are heldon by a large nut and the drum and bearings are one piece unless you have a press. It will be a little tough to get off and a slide hammer does wonders.

  • Anonymous Jun 06, 2013

I love your use of a slide hammer acting as a puller. I have use them many times in the machinist trade. Although I haven't yet tried to take the culprit apart, I am getting the imnpression that a slide hammer will be very useful. Thanks for the reminder. Also, if nothing else works, there is alway a bigger hammer. lol!

The middle hub is for the axle! This does NOT hold the drum on. The drum has a hole in the middle that sits on the hub nut. The drum will pull off. You can use a rubber mallet or 2-5lb hand-held sledge to knock it loose.

  • Anonymous Jul 09, 2013

forrest_knol is correct. On my 2004 Aveo the drum has the bearings seated inside it. You MUST take the hub nut off to take the brake drum off.

04 Chevy aveo right rear wheel won't turn after carwash and got below freezing and blizzard. What could of happened and what can I do.

Most likely the brakes shoes have locked hard onto the brake drum on the right rear.

Have the car towed to a brake specialist and they will remove the brake drum and locate and fix the problem for you. I note others have had similar problems with rear brake lock up.

I have a 2004 chevy aveo. the rear driver side brake is locked. can not turn tire. how can I get the drum off. am having a lot of problems

you are going to have to access the hole in the back of the hub with a screwdriver and back off the self adjuster.

The inside of the drum looks like the below pic. The adjuster is the long horizontal cylinder above the axle. It has a gear on it. Stick your screwdriver in and turn the gear until the drum loosens.

What is the secret to removing the rear brake drums from a 2004 Saturn Vue?

Once you have the rear wheels removed and the back of the vehicle safely supported, then inspect the drum.If there is (there might not be) shiny brass looking phillips head screw bolts on the face of the drum, then remove those by turning them counterclockwise. If there is no screws, or you already removed them, then your next step is to take a fairly heavy hammer( at least a 2lb ) a firmly hit the face of the drum to shock it loose from the hub assembly.Be careful not to hit the studs , you can damage them.Keep on with the forceful hits on the face of the drum, and alternate the hits across from each other on the face of the drum.Make sure your parking brake is not set and the drum can come off...I hope I could help!!! Rate me accordingly...Thanks.

Passenger rear wheel locked up, 2004 Chevy Aveo LS, person said parking brake was stuck.. coiuld it have frozen that way?

This also happened to my 2004 Chevy Aveo. The drivers side rear wheel locked up when it first got extremely cold in December 2009. I had to change the rear wheel cylinder because it broke. They also found the rear wheel bearing also had to be changed. GM charges $180 for 1 rear wheel bearing. To make matters worse I had to order the whole backing plate which came with the rear wheel cylinder and a whole bunch of hardware.
If you look in the GM manual it says that you should flush and change your brake fluid every 24 months. My mechanic told me that moisture normal wrecks the brake cylinder. I'm not sure what happened to the wheel bearing but from now on I'll make sure to flush my brake fluid every 24 months.

1989 chevy 3500 4x4 454 rear brake drum removal. Does the axle bolts need to be removed

Can you tell me which type of axle you have?

Full Floating Axles To remove the drums from full floating rear axles, use the Axle Shaft Removal & Installation procedure in Section 7. Full floating rear axles can readily be identified by the bearing housing protruding through the center of the wheel.

Semi-Floating Axles
  1. Raise and support the rear end on jack stands.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Pull the drum from the brake assembly. If the brake drums have been scored from worn linings, the brake adjuster must be backed off so that the brake shoes will retract from the drum. The adjuster can be backed off by inserting a brake adjusting tool through the access hole provided. In some cases the access hole is provided in the brake drum. A metal cover plate is over the hole. This may be removed by using a hammer and chisel.

You may have to back off the automatic adjuster before you can pull the drum from the brake assembly

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Brake drums

Try using a hub puller. I used one with sucess on my 2004 Aveo. The Aveo has studs that are installed in the brake drum (rather than in a hub behind the drum). I used a hub puller with arms that bolted to the wheel studs with a center screw that drives down on the spindle (visible after the drums dust cap is removed). Remove the cap and the spindle nut, install the puller, and a few turns are all that are needed to pop the drum off.
