Here is the cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

1998 ford explorer gearshift solenoid

Sounds sort of like an internal wear issue, that may never
be determined, even after a complete disassembly to
rebuild it.

I know that is a vague answer & not a solution or good
guess, but having once owned a trans repair shop, I would
have to show you units apart & you would see wear but
nothing related to your noise or operating issues, just the
way it is with an automatic trans

where ever you had the belt change, take it back, and tell them they didn't leave it right, because it seems the timing is off. this happens when the timing belt is changed and not put properly. even if its just one tooth off, it can cause this problem. and for future transmissionfluid changes, the transmission should never be flushed as it can damage important components within the transmission. but like i said, have the timing belt refitted, because this is going to keep going on if its not fixed. hope this helps, goodluck

My 1998 ford expidition temp rises suddenly then drops back to normal after a few seconds. what causes this?

Could be a few things, - low coolant - bad thermostat- thermostat installed wrong - bad tempature sensor - loose connection to sensor. wiring to gauge. look for the easyest things first.

Evry time i come to a junction my car just cuts out nd the revs go up and down up and down on tick over so when i change gear the revs stay on for about 3 to 4 seconds then drop

Very common fault - idle air valve. There are two types, a 2 bolt or 3 bolt fixing. If you are in the UK give me your registration number and I will give you the part number.
