If it's a GM 700R4, your overdrive hub and drum is burned out. That has happened to me and required a rebuild. If it can't go into forth gear, it cant do any more harm by trying to go to overdrive. That's just a safety mechanism to get you home. In third gear, but home.
You have a shift solenoid sticking its located in the valvebody.Pull the transmission pan off and you will the solenoids in the back of the valvebody they will have wires hooked to them.Replace the bad solenoid and the filter.
I expect you are having internal issues within the tranny. There are valves within in that, from time to time, may fail. Soory to say but from this vantage point I suspect you'll need to drp the tranny and rebuild or replace with another used/rebuild.
If you have lost third you have an internal problem. It will either be the input carrier, third/forth clutches, or a valve body issue. You may price a rebuild job at a trans shop, or a trans from a wrecking yard. 700R4 trans is getting hard to find from wrecking yards. Good Luck
