I have a 2002 Dodge Caravan that on occassion smells like gas by the front drivers side wheel. During the colder months it would be strong inside the cabin when the heater was on. I can go weeks without the smell of gas. Could it have to do with the tank being full. Also one other note it usually just occurs with the first start up of the day. The rest of the day I cannot smell it. I ahve had the fuel rail checked fuel filter mechanic cannot find the problem. My vin is not part of the 2002 Dodge recall for fuel problem.
Don't over fill the tank, when it clicks off thats it!! any check engine light? I had fuel smell, and the O-Ring was leaking when I changed the fuel pump. Top of the fuel tank, was leaking only on a full tank, Also evap, pump and hoses do crack and leak but it will show, in a check engine light usually

Sounds like you may need to inspect and replace your fuel line from front to rear. no other reason for your problem.

I've got a '99 Oddy with the same symptom of gas odor inside and outside of the vehicle. Gas cap was secure and the level of fuel made no difference, so by process of elimination, I checked and followed the fuel lines and made sure there were no cracks that I physically could put an eye and hand on and eventually ended up at the fuel injectors and fuel rail. From there, all you need to do is remove the plastic cover plate from the intake plenum and the injectors will be exposed as well as the fuel rail. Turn the car on and wrap some paper towel over your hand like a mitten and run it over the suspected areas. You'll either find your leak there or the fuel filter located under the rear sliding doors.

check the vent hoses on the purg tank under the hood or check the one that runs back to the gas tank they use. dryrot

there is a recall on some of the fuel lines under the hood, they get old and leak.
SOURCE: strong smell of gas inside and outside the vehicle
there can either be a hole in the tank or in the carbon filter of the fuel system. or a bad seal on a hose leading to that Carbon filter. But assuming that the smel is stronger at the rearside, it is more likely to be an issue around the gas tank. Maybe if the belly 'sat' on a rock it could be even on the upper part of the tank(but not that likely, rather a joint again)

I too smell gas, but usually just after i turn it off. I have 1999 Grand Caravan. My thoughts are on the evap cannister, since it is charcol based. Also my MPG is way down from when it was new. I have trying to figure out how to check the cannister. I don't have any trouble codes. Also, i have 200,000 miles on the van and I only do the minimums in maintenance, oil changes, air filters and occasionally have the injection system cleaned. Serviced at 100,000 and will have again soon. still on the 100,000 mile plugs and wires. So if i don't get this problem fixed, i can still say i have got my money's worth out of the van. still drives like a champ!
150,000 miles and I have the same problem - only when the recirculated air button is ON and the A/C is running... Will have to check the Air Filter mentioned below.
