1993 Nissan Altima Gearshifter or Transmission problem
1993 Nissan Altima with 158,000 miles. Problem: Gearshifter and Transmission
Problem #1: I have a problem that I'm noticing with gearshifter when starting the car. Sometimes when the car is in the Parked ''P'' position it will not start. If I press the gearshifter forward, it starts! Sometimes that doesn't work. So...I put the car into Neutral ''N'' position, then it starts. I figure this must be a sensor problem or linkage adjustment, but I'm not sure? Need help on fixing the problem since I'm a Shade Tree mechanic, someone with Nissan experience, please.
Problem #2: Transmission loads up well in idling position. If I'm sitting, while the car is running in Drive ''D'' position for long period of time, and then press the accelerator, the car does not move and transmission does not engage. Then suddenly, out of nowhere the transmission engages with the increased rpm, and jumps into gear jerking the car forward. I've cleaned the transmission screen and replaced fluid, but it still does this. I drive the car everyday, and have had it for 15 years. Is there something I can do to fix this. Your advice and help is appreciated. Navy Sailor on a fixed income.
Re: 1993 Nissan Altima Gearshifter or Transmission...
Sounds like a neutral safety switch in problem #1 and a sticky or faulty solinoid in problem #2
The tranny has quite a few solinoids that are electronic which sometimes burn out or fail with high mileage.
Hope this helps

I think you should try this website link that I have attached. It helps you repair your vehicle easily without more help. Ask the girl in chat at the bottom of the page
the cvt transmissions have become a known issue, and nissan (in canada, not sure about usa) has since offered an extended warranty to 200000 KM ( 120000 M ).
if I may remember, I believe its on the transmission's bell housing up front below the radiator outlet hose. Its a black sensor mounted to the transmission. Hopefully this helps!!
the axle nut should be a 36mm
will also need a 17mm to remove three bolts holding ball joint to control arm and a pry bar to pop axle out of transmission. if replacing right side will need tounhook support bearing
all new cars are computer and sensor driven the most effective way to deal with ur problem is get a diagnostic reading on your vehicle to find out the malfunctioning component. otherwise its a trail and error thing and u may fix things that r not necessary the problem. it could be something difficult or complex, the money spent on finding out whats wrong will save u future time and money
