1998 Subaru Outback Wagon developed a grinding (metal on metal) noise coming from under the front. Any ideas what this could be? It occurs when acceleration from a stop around the 1500 rpm mark, and when acceleration though the 1500 rpm mark.
as well, the front left brake has developed a high pitched squeal when stopping. this usually only occurs when applying the brakes in a normal manner, if the brake is hit hard or very lightly there is no high pitched squealing. we have been told that it is the material of the brake pads that causes this, but for two years and all the time? I don't think so.
also, it seems to be burning too much gas. at the half a tank mark i will have only gone 175km... it is possible that the gas gauge isn't calibrated properly and reads lower than it actually is. could the car be running the fuel mix too rich?
any input would be helpful, thanks!
The first issue, I would have the brake calipers checked for either a pin stuck or one of the pistons stuck, It is a dual piston caliper and sometimes one will stick causing pad to angle slightly. While inspecting the brake issue also check your wheel bearings, which may be the squeak. On the fuel issue, I will tell you a secret, LOL, but Subaru has set the fuel gauge to read E but still have about 5 gallons of fuel left. I use US measurements, but trying to use my head I believe you are getting about 22-24 MPG from what you said and that is pretty good. I hope this helps a bit and have a great day.

Thanks, the dealer checked the brakes, and apparently the material of the pads is what causes it to squeak and nothing can be done about it. Is it possible that my brakes are so rare that it is the only one that makes the squeaking noise??
the rattling turned out to be the exhaust shields, and they were removed.
as far as the fuel goes, they updates the fuel management program in the car, so it will take a while before i notice a difference, if any.
