1988 765 turbo wagon. Car in either neutral or park, I turn the key to the start position, no cranking - I used to have to hold the shifter fully forward with one hand while turning the key with the other to get it to start, but now, nothing. I THINK the nss is bad, but don't know for sure. Is there a 'temporary fix' for this at least until I can get the money to fix it permanently? I've been told 3 things (by 2 different shops): that the neutral safety switch is bad, that there's a bushing in the shifter that's preventing the nss from making contact, and that both the nss AND shifter need replacement. One shop wanted $600+ for the bushing replacement & the other wanted over $1100 for the shifter/nss replacement. I can't afford either one right now.
My first instinct is to suggest cleaning the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) using any type of spray on electrical contact cleaner. For other suggestions, go to: http://www.forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=39526

You linkage is working properly it sounds like, especially if the indicator for "D, R, N", etc are lining up. However the linkage or the neutral safety switch may need to be adjusted. More than likely, it's your neutral safety switch.
The brake pedal release has nothing to do with the neutral safety switch when switching gears.
The brake pedal release is just a safety to prevent you from pushing the gear shifter accidentally. Actually, you should be able to start the truck without holding the brakes.
If the neutral safety switch is bad or misaligned, it'll do exactly what you're describing. If pulling it down in neutral starts the truck, then that's a sure indicator.

It sounds like you new switch needs adjusted just a little bit.

If you hear a click when the ignition is turned but no start its a high possibility that its the starter or the wiring going to and from the starter. Hope this helps! ~Derek~
CAUTION
Since you must work under the vehicle to adjust most shift linkages make sure you properly raise and support the vehicle before working under it. Also, wear safety glasses or goggles while working under the vehicle.
A voltmeter can be used to check the switch for voltage when the ignition key is turned to the START position with the shift lever in PARK or NEUTRAL. If there is no voltage, the switch should be adjusted or replaced.
