Car started then just died out...its a pontiac grand am 2004 gt I believe its the fuel pressure regulator sensor are they easy to change
GM vehicles used a vacuum sensor. If the hose that connects to it is cracked or off it will do this. Located on the intake manifold.

Is it the 3400 v6 or the 2.2l four cylinder? If it the v6 then what you have to do is first know where it is. It located on the end of your fuel rail on the driver side of the car. There will be a plastic hose coming off the top of the regulator, unplug it. You then have to undo your fuel line that runs into the bottom of the regulator. You have to use a wrench to get it off, not sure what size it is. Once you undo the fuel line the next step is to unbolt it from the fuel rail. There will be two screws that run in the side of the fuel pressure regulator that are facing the driver side of the car and are threaded in towards the passenger side of the car, just undo those two screws and the regulator should come off. Just repeat the process backwards to put it back on.

I have had similar problems with other model cars in the past. One time it was a knock sensor needing replacing. The other time was O2 sensor. Both gave similar symptoms as you stated, especially when it was the O2 sensor.

Fuel Pressure Regulator
- Removal & Installing
The
fuel pressure regulator is a diaphragm-operated relief valve with fuel
pump pressure on one side and regulator spring pressure and intake
manifold vacuum on the other side. The regulator's function is to
maintain a constant fuel pressure across the injectors at all times.
The pressure regulator compensates for engine load by increasing fuel
pressure as engine vacuum drops.
The fuel pressure regulator is
serviced as a separate component. When servicing the pressure
regulator, make sure that the O-ring back-up, large O-ring, filter
screen and small O-ring are properly positioned on the pressure
regulator.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The need
to work as cleanly as possible cannot be over-emphasized. Even the
smallest amount of dirt, if allowed into the fuel pressure regulator
and/or the fuel rail, will find its way to the fuel injectors. The
nozzle openings of the injectors are very small. Keep hands and tools
clean. Clean the areas to be disconnected with a suitable solvent.
Carefully cover open fittings and connections to keep out foreign
material. Dirt in the injectors almost guarantees a clogged fuel
injector and engine performance problems.
