1988 Pontiac Grand Am Is cold starting and after 20 minutes it finally starts but surges sometimes while driving. I had the fuel filter changed and still have this problem. What could be the problem?

The car starts but dies within two seconds and after 20 minutes or more of trying to start the car it finally starts. The rest of the day it will start without any problems but will surge a little bit while driving. I just had the fuel filter changed and same cold start problem but it runs better once I can get it to start. It is really cold outside. 1988 Pontiac Grand Am 2.5 engine

SOURCE: 1997 pontiac grand prix with major issues

Dummy lights. I found that if the tire pressure low light reset button on a 1997 Pont grand prix is located under the steering dash. The button is yellow. Just push it in for 5 seconds and it will reset the indicator light.

If you have a engine service soon light on and the vehicle stalls often. Replace the MAF sensor. It runs about $250.00 from Auto Zone. They will credit back or pay back $92.00 for the old MAF part taken out. This will allow your 1997 Pont grand prix to run without idle problems and stalling issues.

SOURCE: 96 grand am won't start!

I just went thru a similar problem. When I changed my fuel filter the problem stopped. I can't say that it is the exact solution for your problem. But it is a cheap fix if it is. You can remove the old one and tell before you buy a new one. The filter is located in fron of the gas tank. It comes off easily. If its clogged then replace it. ( I recommend replacing it evey year anyways). There are a few other possible problems that it could be. I hope this helps

What was replaced in the tune up? Usually the coil paks cause these types of issues. Also fuel filter or fuel pump will allow enough fuel to start and sputter like you describe.

You might also want to check your fuel filter and your fuel pump for proper operation before going on so that you dont spend more for uneccessary repairs.

I had the same problem. You should clean out your throttle body. You can prob do it yourself in 20 minutes or less. My 04 grand prix starts up everytime now.

1992 pontiac boneville, keeps stalling

Have you chg.fuel filter and had a fuel pressure test done? Does it have spark after it stalls? Fuel pumps are a common problem, they work when cold get warmed up they quit, after a while quit all together. Do the fuel pressure test.

Transmission locking up

If it has been sitting for ten years....you need to do an engine oil change, and a transmission fluid and filter change.

Ad some fuel stabilizer to the gas tank also. It is available EVERYWHERE.

Yes it could very well be the crank sensor. It is located under the ignition module on the firewall side of the engine...Did you make sure the firing order is correct?
