1981 corvette a/c system wont cool.

I have a 1981 vette, serviced the a/c system but still wont get cold. what should the low and hi side pressures be, still have the R-12 system in it. shouild I deplete the a/c system and change it over to the R-134 system?

The compressor does kick on, I've put in 3 cans, still not real cold. does this have some type valve between the dryer and the compressor which is not letting the coolant to do its cooling. still have not found out the hi and low pressure for the R-12 system. thanks for info..

the compressor stays on until you select it off. thanks for the info, I will check and see if I can find the expansion valve and give it a little thump and see what happens.

If you haven't found a solution yet, you may want to trace through the system and check on your hot water cut off valve. The 81 Corvettes have a special valve between the coolant line and the heater core that has to engage to stop the flow of hot coolant when the AC is turned on. I don't have a picture of one, but if you do a search on ecklers.com, it is easy to find and recognize. Another option would be to check the vacuum manifold switch and tension cable in your heater control. If the cable is seized or you hear a hissing from the vacuum manifold, your controls may not be engaging fully.

Tell me more how much did you put in the system? and did the compressor ever kick on ? the compressor is turned on and off by a pressure switch on your dryer .. when your full or at right level with your freon the compressor will kick on .. let me know if this helps any .. you might not have quite enough in there yet to turn on the compressor.. usually empty takes about 3 cans to fill the system.. thanks Jerry

Yes your expansion valve also has a screen in it near the firewall usually.. its in the line somewhere slipped in to a joint in your line , or near the dryer . maybe i can find out what your pressures are when I get back down to the shop tomorrow.. by the way does the compressor stay on all the time now after 3 cans ? or does it ever kick off ?

My Vette has a rough idle and the radiator cooling fans come on when it is cold

Usually the fans would come on because the computer is attempting to prevent the engine from overheating. Sort of a default action.
Or the cooling system is low on coolant and no liquid is reaching the temp sensor.
Have you been able to narrow down which cylinder and if it is spark or fuel related ?

I have a 1981 corvette I put freon in it and 1 line is cold 1 line is hot contro l door is closing from hot to cold but will not cool.

Check that your cabin air ducting does not have disconnects and verify the fan is blowing air through the cooling condenser coil. Something may have fallen down through the windshield defroster slots and jammed the fan.

Hi guys my 2001 ls1 corvette has a problem with the oil pressure gauge it fluxuates from low to high tripping the service engine warning and the red light the car has a good level of oil and all other...

This does sound like the oil pressure sending unit is going bad. Had an 02 Vette with the same issue.

The location of the sending unit is behind the intake manifold. You will unfortunately have to remove the manifold in order to replace the unit, but this is easy enough as the intake manifold is as simple as they get on the LS1 engine.

Hope this helped!

Hello folks i have a 1981 vette it smokes gray

hello. Thanks for choosing fixya! I would begin by getting this baby scanned. I agree with you that there are some carb. issues, such as gumming which could be cleared up with a couple of bottles of Seafoam, from your local auto parts store. Good luck with it. Regards, Joe
